it would be great to be able to add custom images and also the ability to set a date to auto show each one.

Sorry about that. We were discussing how to deal with translations and with the downtime phpBB.com experienced, forgot to revisit the PRs.

For what it's worth I have been working on this extension for a while and have found a solution to have it automatically produce hats everywhere. You can see it in action here. You'll notice that it not only produces a hat on the site logo, but also on the forum categories as well as two extensions I have installed on that site.

For other holidays to be considered, need some images preferably hat type ones (like new years, etc). I'll then consider modifying the code for an admin to be able to simply choose which holiday type they want to show.

The way it is coded at the site linked to above should fit all forum styles that use the default style tags (forumbg, forabg, etc).

All hail the power of jQuery! :)

EDIT: If you want to test out the version I have you can get it here. I know Bill isn't able to do PR's at the moment so doing this here.

Nice work Rich,

Upon testing there seems to be a slight conflict with the AJAX user info ext: viewtopic.php?f=456&t=2319121 or at least I think it is that extension causing issue from what I can tell, looking at the produced HTML.

Basically means there's a static 'Hat' at the very bottom of the board: http://www.prewheeled.co.uk/

As guests aren't allowed to view profiles, no one can tell but those that can. Can't trouble shoot what I can't see.

Saying that I installed that extension and see nothing different when the two are installed. Be my guest

Hmmm. Must be something just on my board then...Wen I disable the AJAX user info ext, all is well and the hat at the bottom is not there.

Will let you know if I find the cause.

EDIT: OK, enabled guest viewing of profiles on my board. Noticed that there is no issue on IE11, but the extra hat shows on latest Google chrome. Just on my board btw, yours seems fine.
