Usually quality hosts use hardened PHP from CloudLinux. It backports patches to old PHP versions, among other hardening changes.

It's quite secure afaik. However, usually not an option for budget shared hosting plans.

Like I said, security is not the issue. It's just not a good idea to stay with old just to stay with old, as things change. I can understand keeping an old 3.0.x board due to custom mods being installed that cannot be easily converted to extensions.

If people want to keep using old versions of phpbb, they have an option/choice to to so. They wont get any support for whatever they are using (only to upgrade to latest) & that is their choice as well.

I disagree people should have the right to use what ever they want it should be their choice taking a choice not the company's, The primary purpose of a company is to make the customer happy and you they sure are not going to that by having a web host screw with their site possibility causing them thousands of dollars the only thing will result in is a major law suit

I doubt a judge is going to be sympathetic to a site refusing to enact a contingency plan when a company announces the removal of a php version years out of support.

There is one simple answer to this - set up your own server and then you can run whaterver you want on it.

that is one of your problems. you apparently have no idea what the purpose of a company is.

the purpose of any company/corporation etc. is to make a profit. period.
some like to make a profit by doing good for their customers. some do stupid things that makes them go out of business.
some are run my idiots some are run by evil people and some by saints. but without profit they are not viable and do not last long.

To add onto this. Even if your isp doesn't allow inbound connections or port forwarding, there are alternatives you can pay for.

Absolutely, and there have been many times corporations have actually screwed people over for profit. Dropping php support wouldn't even make the top 10,000 things a corporation has done that is good for profit, but not so much for anyone else.

Isnt there a security risk also for the company running outdated PHP? I mean like a hacker geting into the infrastructure via the outdated PHP and code running on thet outdated PHP, infecting/affecting other customers?
Or isnt that a thing?

Absolutely!

There’s a question, when you inadvertently browse to a none ssl site and get the insecure message with no padlock what do you as the user do?

What is so great about 3.0.x? I can understand the OP's situation as they have MODs that their site needs to function, but it isn't inherently better than 3.3.x just because it is old.

It is not better than the current version. It has not been updated with the newest features and espcially the newest security features.

having said that, there is nothing wrong with wanting to run and older version for whatever the reason is.
you just will not get any official support for using it.

there are a lot of people out there still using phpBB2 and even some using phpBB1
maybe they just like it, maybe they don't want to have to upgrade and start over with MODs, styles etc.
maybe they are just lazy, doesn't matter what their reasons are and since there are those users out there there is no reason
not to have an unofficial support site to help them out.

I am running 3.0.14 on my main site.
I have spent a huge amount in personalized MODs. The site is heavily used and visited and will turn 20 next year.
I am planning to upgrade, but ... you know ... never change a running system ... I am hesitating! And it will cost me another fortune. :D
