Playing MP3's in a post

Post by surfnorthwest »

Ever since I upgraded to my board to 3.1.6 MP3 files no longer play in a post.

Typically a user will upload the MP3 and by default the Windows Media Player is shown. However since the upgrade when you click on the play button nothing happens. Any ideas?

Neither 3.0 nor 3.1 have any way to natively play MP3 files so you must have made some changes to allow that. Presumably a custom BBCode? But maybe some other changes to include a player?

MP3 is one of the default extensions for uploaded attachments. They should play just fine.

But, by default, they are just presented as a file to download.

MP3s and a lot of other audio/video are now generally supported by browsers via <audio> or <video> tag in HTML5.

Some Javascript can be used to query if the browser supports a particular MIME type. See the Steamcast link in my signature for a working example. It uses Flash as a backup option for aacPlus streams.

In the ACP under Posting -> Manage attachment extensions you can switch it back to Windows Media. However, it'd be better if phpBB added support for audio/video tag instead of relying on external plugins.

By default, yes. But if you move mp3 into the Windows Media group, they will play.
