Just another idea:
Why would you not produce a drop-down menu with the initial letters, to avoid cluttering the user interface?

Works great for me after few days of testing :)
waiting for new version using phpbb_users table and not cookies :ugeek:

You should not have installed on a live forum since it is not a released extension (it's not even a proper release candidate).
