I also use this extension (forced updating by phpbb 3.0.14 with seo usu to phpbb 3.1.x) do not all configurations work and is abandoned. It does not work with phpBB 3.2.x
Someone who would continue the development. It is too useful to be abandoned.

there are a lot of discussions here about SEO extensions.

the common theme is that phpBB does not need any of those url extensions for increased SEO.
years ago search engines did not know what to do with the types of urls that phpbb and other dynamic php based websites
use. however, that is no longer the case.

the best way to get good rankings etc. on the search engines is to create lots and lots of good relevant content about
the subject of your forum. content is what google etc. cares about more than what the URL is.
people don't even care about the urls anymore, they just click on the link if they are interested.

remember, nobody goes to google to look for your board. they search for content about whatever subject they are interested in.
'if your board has that content then they will find it in the search and visit it.

If you install any so called "SEO" extensions on your board and it does not stay updated then when it all goes away you will lose any SEO ranking that you had when it no longer works. best to just leave the URLs alone.

You shouldn't worry about that url friendly is not a determining factor. Contrary to what can be read in this forum, SEO urls do have a weight in the algorithm, but this is only considerable when the robot has discovered the page but has not yet scratched it. Once it is scratched and if it indexes, keep in mind that the weighting for that value is 0.1 of the total

There is no reason you would lose a forum over an SEO extension. They use a .htacces rules to do internal rewrite to the appropriate php file. viewtopic.php or whatever just needs to recognize the url structure and serve the correct content.

If you remove the SEO extension/mod/edits it just reverts to the regular url structure. The issue is that URL's search engines have previously indexed, users have bookmarked or links posted in your forums are no longer accessible unless you reverse the .htacces rules. That's a pretty big problem and SEO wise a huge deal. You need new .htaccess rules to redirect the SEO URL's to appropriate resource to fully revert to phpBB URL structure.

Another problem is if you installed this when you have mnay topics the SEO extension uses a 301 to redirect phpBB URL's. If you remove it now you are redirecting back to those URL's you have already told the search engine were moved permanently.

This is the primary reason I would advise against SEO extensions as the support for them going forward is not guaranteed. It's not something you can just remove without serious ramifications. You need to make some serious considerations about what you are getting yourself into

The extension stopped working after updating the forum core to the latest version 3.3.12, please, help!

The forum URLs are currently unavailable - /forum/viewforum.php?f=97
And the addresses of the topics are /forum/topic777.html
The user URL is also not specified /forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=34217

I rolled back the changes on the forum to the penultimate version of the forum 3.3.11, friendly urls work. When I updated the forum again, it stopped working again.
