3.2 Approve New Members

Post by Yorkermiles » Sat Jul 15, 2017 12:27 pm

I got spammed by some Russian nonsense yesterday and despite my spambot measures they managed to post about 16 topics of rubbish.
Please can someone tell me how to stop new users from posting without approval as the whole system has changed dramatically?
Thanks in advance and why is it always Russian spam?

Nothing changed from 3.0.6 -> 3.2

Make sure you haven't got guest posting on in the forum where they were.

Yes that's all.

Did they register before you set the limit?
Have you checked the groups they're in?
Have you checked the guest permissions?

www.norfolkbroadsforum.co.uk
I am sure I saw a box to tick once that gave you an option to approve or not.
I had the option of posting to 3 and some Russian came along and posted like mad. All I could make out was Xrumer, I did not think folks still played around with black hat SEO.

I can't see a forum on that link but have you logged out, made an account yourself and posted to see if you have everything set up correctly?

I'd say for one thing your Q&A is too weak, if you can Google the correct answer then the bots can too. Try some thing like:

Q: What are the first letters of each word of the title in the header?
A: nbf, NBF

(this is an example, be creative, bots can read phpBB as well)

If you can Google the answer it's no good.

When you say bots can read PHPBB what exactly do you mean as I often see bots as being on the forum?

There are good bots and bad bots. The good bots (read only GoogleBot for instance ) gather information and place you in your rankings amongst other things. The bad bots are those that want to spam your board with garbage and they are the ones the Q&A are aimed at.

I am still getting spammed.
Could somebody please walk me through the process of changing permissions so that newly registered users can not do anything at all until I have approved it?
Even with new member post limit I still got multiple posts.
Thank you in advance, this is an urgent request for assistance.

I just made a test account and posted in Broads Bylaws with no restriction. I'm not in the newly registered users group.

Can you post a screenshot of your user registration settings page and the group forum permissions for that forum too.
