Hello. Please help reCAPTCHA v1 forum now crashed!

Post by TSButcher »

Hello everyone. New member here.

I am a mod on this forum...

http://suzukits.informe.com/forum/

Sadly I can no longer log into ACP. I think the forum uses version 3 of phpBB ?

We think the issue is that the site has not been upgraded to reCAPTCHA v2.

Now, informe.com are the host (I guess). Problem is, no software updates have been done by them since 2008 or 2012!

I realise that some php mods need to be done to get v2 reCAPTCHA installed, private keys etc. But how?

Can anyone shed some light on this please? We are at a loss as to what to do...

Thanks, Tony.

Can you please explain what happened to cause this, did it ‘just happen’, did you do anything to cause it? What phpBB version is that board exactly? Also, please fill out the Support Request Template and post it back here to enable us to assist you better.

Thanks! And thanks for having me.

Approx 18 Apr 2018, our forum stopped working. No members could log in etc. We believe it was when google shut off reCAPTCHA v1.

Issue is, the forum is hosted (free host) so I don't have access to .php or anything like that to upgrade to V2 reCAPTCHA. Or even disable it.

I believe the forum was set up using http://informe.com/ back in 2009. They wont respond to my requests for help.

I guess I just need to know if this issue can be sorted out, or not. Any help is much appreciated. Or forum has 1700 members and over 30,000 posts etc. Now nobody can see images as only members can (if they can log-in!)

Thank you. Is it worth while me filling out the "Support Request Template" ?

I also see "NOTE: phpBB 3.1.x is at its End of Life stage and support will NOT be provided after July 1st, 2018.". Interesting!

I am unsure of version. Attached is a screen grab of bottom (footer I guess) of our forum...

Cheers, Tony.

I believe the board is version 3.0 which, unfortunately, is no longer supported and as you say, 3.1 will go the same way on July 1st, we can only assist you with updating to the latest version. Also, your board is with a free forum/hosting so you need to speak to them, not being able to use FTP and phpMyAdmin is a big issue. When you do speak to them ask them if they've done anything lately that could affect your board like changing PHP versions etc. also ask if you can have a copy of the database and or files. informe still seem to be active.

"Also, your board is with a free forum/hosting so you need to speak to them, not being able to use FTP and phpMyAdmin is a big issue."

That is what I thought...

"When you do speak to them ask them if they've done anything lately that could affect your board like changing PHP versions etc. also ask if you can have a copy of the database and or files."

I have tried. As their support forum uses reCAPTCHA v1, I can not create an account :x

"informe still seem to be active."

Yup, boat is adrift with nobody at the helm. Best I can do is just wait, I guess...

Thanks for the help and for pretty much coming to the same realisation as I have... I have started another forum using proboards. shame We can't import all the posts...

I am sure this is a reCAPTCHA v1 issue. Google switched it off. Shame they did not set up sort of a "wrapper" to allow v1 sites to use v2 without having to contact their forum provider to get them to upgrade. I suspect they have been not at the helm for over 5 years!! :|

I sometimes get a prompt when logging into ACP for reCAPTCHA. I think this is the issue...

Anyone else having this issue?

I don't think it is an issue of them editing a script. More the opposite!

For what it costs you should get 'proper' hosting, going with a free host again your only going to get this issue repeated in a couple of years. There are a few good hosts out there that do a 'first year free' offer and then after that it's no more that a couple of £/$/€ a month. We cannot really recommend a host, but we do recommend that you visit WebHostingTalk.

Hey thanks Mick. I guess we all never get something for nothing!

Thanks for the recommendation!

Proboards I see have 50 members that act as support staff, which is pretty good. I think we only have 1GB of space (for free forum), which is not much and attachments are limited to 3 per post and each attachment is limited to 1MB (3MB total per post).

[spam link removed] works pretty good.

I do believe that proboards will not let you have a copy of the database either. so, if and when they go away or you just want to move to your own hosting, you will lose everything again.

bite the bullet and get a real hosting account. you can get a domain name and a hosting account for less than 50USD a year.
