Control Spam post and accounts

Post by aalishan » Tue Jul 24, 2018 2:51 pm

Hi,
I am using pbpBB for more than 10 years and love it. except the ability to control the spam post and user accounts. I tried many add-ons and spent xxx hours trying to find a permanent solution but never succeeded.
I wondering what is advice from pbpBB experts in 2018. Is there a specific add-on you recommend, any built-in mechanism in 3.2.2?
Regards
Aalishan

This means new accounts can only post freely after their first post has been approved.

But ideally you want to stop them registering to begin with.
Use the built in Q&A antispam to set a question that cannot be searched for. Preferably something about your board, the logo etc.

How to configure Q&A
  1. Administration Control Panel (ACP) > Spambot countermeasures> Installed plugins > click the dropdown box and select Q&A (it will be greyed out)
  2. Click the configure button then click add
  3. Add your question and answer (you need a Q&A for each language you have installed) click submit
  4. Click "back to previous page" then click "back"
  5. Select Q&A from the dropdown box (again)
  6. Click submit at the bottom of the page.
  7. Done.

Or you can try the two extensions hosted on this forum in my signature. You may be interested in CIDRAM over at Github.

This subject always gets raised. No one bothers to do a search.

Thank you. I had Q&A enable but was not productive enough. I will give another try with more complex questions and 'new member post limit' combination along with "Sortables Captcha" and "Stop Forum Spam" extensions.

This means new accounts can only post freely after their first post has been approved.

How will admin get notified about the action he/she needs to take to approve the first post of newly registered user?
I created a new account and on submitting the 1st post on forum "This message has been submitted successfully, but it will need to be approved by a moderator before it is publicly viewable. You will be notified when your post has been approved.
"
- This looks good . But I am expecting the system to send an email to Admin to review and approve.

Post approval is not an Admin function - it is a Moderator function.

Moderators, not Admins, can set their notification options in their UCP to receive an email when a post requires approval.

The complexity of the question is not the issue. The issue is, can it be Googled.

A Q&A for phpbb.com/community might be:

Q: What is the first word in the header beginning with "c"?
A: creating

I am the moderator and Admin. I think I also added myself to the moderator group, I can't remember. But I get email notifications.

If you are the founder/installer of the board then you are already in the global moderator group and therefore a moderator.

if you are not getting board emails then you should check your email settings for the admin panel and for your user account.

I enabled 'new member post limit', I noticed new registrations are automatically getting enrolled in group 'Newly registered users' and 'Registered users'. I was hoping new users get promoted to 'Registered users' only after the moderator approves the first post. Is that correct expectation?
How do I ensure new registrations do not get into 'Registered users' by default?
Please advice

That is correct.

The NRU group sets several NEVER permissions preventing them from doing things that the registered users can do.
When the right number of posts have been approved they drop out of the NRU group and just take on the full registered users permissions.

Everyone is a registered user. The other groups they are in allow or disallow other permissions over that base set.

Once they log back in that is ;)
