How to ban words

Post by kamaleon »

Hello,

Is there a way to ban specific words or I can just use word censoring?

Thanks

ACP, Posting tab, Word censoring, Add new word.

Word censoring only prevents the display of words, it does not control the entering of the words

And of course there are always ways to get around it such as spacing out the word w o r d so that the censor can't 'see' it.

Maybe you should explain more about what you're trying to do.

If someone talks about child pornography, I want that post to be banned for example.

I suspect that's a bit more difficult because again how you identify those words properly as you can space them out to avoid the checks. Are you expecting those sorts of posts? They're exceedingly rare. I've certainly never seen one in nearly 20 years of forum management. If you're trying to pre-empt something you've never even seen I wouldn't worry about it.

That is why you have Moderators - so that they can "police" such activity

In Spain there have been many problems with that issue.

Some members revealed the name of a victim for example.

https://verne.elpais.com/verne/2018/05/ ... 92748.html

They even asked to close entire forums because of that.

Huge forums, of course, not my case yet.

So just trying to prevent problems.

As David says, that's down to moderation. If the site owners and mods are not sensible enough to stop a topic with such content then they're idiots.
I wouldn't worry about addressing something that is highly unlikely to happen.

When you talk in your forum about current news, in Spain, this is very likely to happen with all the corruption and problems we have lately :)

Then make sure you have a lot of moderators. Or put all the posts in that forum on a queue. If people can't be sensible about what they post then you have rules.

Sorry to revive an old topic but this is the first hit on Google, might help people.

The answer to ban words is found in topic 2135443, an older one from 2011, the code you put in posting.php is working great.

Topic is here : viewtopic.php?t=2135443

Would be awesome to have in ACP below Word Censorship also a place to ban words with regex. Yes, spammers can just use words substitution like many people said but the point is to make spammer's life as hard as possible. It's just another weapon against them.
