It's always a matter of taste.
If it has unread posts, the icon flashes (At least in version 3). Hardly any style has that.
Also other things are special. The style is already quite unusual - especially (you don't have to like that) :)

Which unfortunately makes updating much more complicated.

ClanDarkness3 has a nice gaming feel to it but I'm not fond of the grey topics/posts part on the right.

I wasn't aware that there was still a styledemo board form phpBB3.0.
Nice to see the variation of styles 3.0 had. I really liked ProFormell.
For phpBB2 I went with Aeolus (by cyberalien) and had lots of fun making my modifications work with subsilver and with Aeolus
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Indeed just noticed it myself

Don't worry about the buildings. That's just a background image. You can change that to anything you like, so it's no barrier to using a more up to date style as a base.

I'm not up for doing this myself at the moment, but at a glance it doesn't look that complicated. It's just a basic forum with some eye candy thrown around the outside. You may not get an exact match, but I'm pretty sure you could get it close enough that nobody would worry. You'd just start with the current codebase and add the fancy bits.

For an expert, certainly. I am still a long way from it.
In the end, it should already contain all the extras and not just be a slimmed-down replica, as some other style authors do with former "works of art".

I have had a look at what you already have on the Styles DB, and I think you could handle this if you put your mind to it. It's mostly a matter of analysing how it's put together, and not being intimidated by it. What divs go where, how they wrap other content, etc. But I wouldn't start with the old codebase and try to convert it. If it were me, I'd start with the 3.2.8 codebase and then do the eye candy to suit.
