query around PHP version required between phpbb v3.2 & v3.3

Post by chanlon1 »

From what I have read:

phpbb3.2.x has to have between PHP 5.4.0+ and PHP < 7.1
phpbb3.3 says "The minimum supported PHP version has been increased to PHP 7.1.3 "

Therefore if you migrate from v3.2.x to v3.3 you will also need to update php on your server?
Am I reading that correctly?

thanks

That is correct.

Even though PHP 7.1.3 is supported in phpBB 3.3.x, you should not use it since PHP 7.1.x is at EOL (end of life) and is no longer maintained.

You should use PHP 7.2.x as a minimum. Using PHP 7.3.x or PHP 7.4.x would be better yet since they are both receiving active support, where as PHP 7.2.x is just receiving security support only.

Actually phpBB 3.2.8 and 3.2.9 (perhaps even lower versions, memory fails me ATM) are compatible with php7.2 (which is sufficient for phpBB3.3).

On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

phpBB 3.2.2 was the first release to support PHP 7.2.x.

P.S. Do not use PHP 7.3.x or 7.4.x if you are running phpBB 3.2.x. It will not work. You must use PHP 7.2.x first if you are running phpBB 3.2.2 to phpBB 3.2.9+. Once you upgrade to phpBB 3.3.x, then you can start using PHP 7.3.x or PHP 7.4.x.

So is that up to my hosting service?
I was given 7.0.33 / came along with the server when I rented the hosting?
& from what I understand will not work for phpBB 3.3.

You should be able to choose what php version you want to use in the control panel of your hosting.

If I change it in the User Control Panel for the hosting /site, does it upgrade for phpBB that is already there, automatically?

That depends on the host. With some hosts you can select it per site, with others you can only select a php version for your complete hosting plan.
If you have a phpBB3.2 and a phpBB 3.3 and can only use 1 php version, then it should be php 7.2
