Absolutely Clueless-- Help me Obi Board

Post by HistPres »

Hi Folks

Im a historical preservationist. Im the admin of several large historical restoration and preservation forums on the book of faces but trying to peel away from there (and hopefully bring members with me while gaining new members who arent on FB )

I am not a tech guy. Apologies. I dont understand a lot of the jargon used.

Can you guys give me a checklist of how to go about building a board, please.

You would first need to register a domain and purchase hosting for it. The domain registration and hosting can be purchased from most hosts as packages. We don't offer recommendations here but you can get them at https://webhostingtalk.com

Once you have registered the domain they will give you credentials for FTP and the database.

You would first download the phpBB files from here:

Download FTP client like WinSCP which will allow you transfer files from your computer to the host from here:

Unzip the file and uplaod to your host using WinSCP, you will need to enter the credentials provided by host.

Follow the directions here for installing phpBB.You will need the database name, username and password provided by your host during installation process.

if you value your time (or your organization has a budget) I'd suggest laying out the small amount of money to use a commercial, ready to use board. It's a lot of work to do it from scratch if you don't already have servers, proper php configuration, domains, firewalls etc. and php knowledge. phpBB3 is a bit clunky if you can't fix things.
