Signature Image Upload from Local Machine

Good day,

I've searched around quite a lot to no avail. Does anyone know of a functional extension in existence, or perhaps one in the pipeline, which will enable users to upload images from their local machines to be used in their signatures? Ideally this would have similar behaviour to that of uploading avatars - or even images on a forum, where one could insert it inline and add any text afterwards.

It's not always great web design to link to external objects which can be lost or modified, and site security settings can lead to certain web browsers displaying images where others don't. Unless one is really tight on hosting space, I don't see why this wouldn't be attractive as a feature.

I know it's just a small cosmetic feature, but users like this kind of functionality.
