Problem with phpbb mail: 554-Reject due to policy restrictions

Post by Athris »

Hello,

i use the phpbb 3.3.8 with php 8.0.23-he.0 on Host Europe webspace.

My mail settings in phpbb configuration:
Image

If i send an test mail or password forgotten mail to @web.de or @gmx.de, i get a "Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender" mail with this content:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
Error
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

XXXXXXXX@web.de
host mx-ha02.web.de [212.227.17.8]
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data:
554-Transaction failed
554-Reject due to policy restrictions.
554 For explanation visit https://web.de/email/senderguidelines
The support@XXX adress from the configuration screenshot exists. It is a normal mail account on my hosting provider.

If i send an message directly from support@XXX account, then it works fine.
If i send an message directly from phpbb forum to some other email provider (@gmail.com, etc.), then it works fine too.

did you go to that link to see what they say about what was wrong with the email?
phpbb has no control over what any mail provider does or does not allow.
since it works with everything else you tried then it is not really a problem with phpBB .

are you using an email address that is at your hosting server?

you@yourdomain.com etc.

Yes, i checked the link.
Yes, I use the email address of my forum domain.

For testing purposes, I enabled SMTP sending in phpbb and configurate the settings (SMTP adress, port, username, password, methode, etc.). After that I sent a test message from the phpbb backend. This message arrived at my @web.de address. After that I tried the "Forgot Password" function, but no email arrived at the same @web.de address. There was also no returned mail.

That is not uncommon. I believe that some mail servers consider those emails as spam and block them.

Isn't it possible that phpbb is sending a malformed header or something?

My hosting provider says there is no problem with the mail server.

That may well be the case but you should contact your host once again and have your Reverse DNS checked. They should be able to give you a clue to the issue and, while contacting your host, be sure to include the information from your error message hopefully it will have the information needed to resolve the issue.
