Board Emails Not Working - HostGator Host

I'm struggling to get emails to work in our board, I've done everything I could think of as far as allowing php to handle email and setting up SMTP to no avail.
When I use SMTP settings I'm getting the following error recorded in ACP, Maintenance, Errors:

If I allow php to handle email in the board I get no errors anywhere I can find however emails are not sent. Test emails to the same domain work, however, they do not work when sent outside of the domain.
When allowing php to handle the mail in the board I get the following returned email for all new activations:

Clean Install phpBB 3.3.8
New database

Anyone else have this issue or have any input on how to correct? I've reached out to the host and they did have me try alternative settings for smtp and nothing made any differeance. They advised I reach out here for assistance.

With SMTP AND SSL test this:

Connecting to mail.afd-gaming.com:Port: 587

With SMTP AND SSL test this:

Connecting to mail.afd-gaming.com:Port: 587

Changing the port to 587 with smpt and verifying SSL certificate on works. No idea why the host didn't catch the port and why I didn't try it before.
