Stop the spammers in the first place?

You don't appear to have a captcha or it’s not working very well for starters.

Q&A + NRU = 0 spam bots (or very few and they can't post until approval anyway)

I couldn't say, you can make an extension request but both reCaptcha v2 & v3 are available for installation in the ACP.

I suppose you're referring to the location field in the profile, as country would be a custom profile field.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Why not just turn profile fields off?

They are basically free advertising space for people, some of them sign up to a forum and just fill in the profile with a link and then never post anything - just so their website is listed in the 'member-list'

At the end of the day, if you want a busy forum people should be joining to discuss, not to share there websites which people clicking on leads them away from your forum.

Although, I just read a spam post on your forum and the user had made 1 post - you are missing out on the superb built in feature that is the 'newly registered users' group which can be used to make every new users 1st post require approval.

Q&A's are very good but if your forum subject is something which will attract users from countries with different languages - it can be tricky.
Most of us will enjoy Christmas in the comfort of our own homes this year, however, sadly, that can't be said for people in the Ukraine who are suffering day after day, due to the Russian invasion.

If you would like to make a small donation to help Ukrainians in their time of need, you can donate to help all Ukrainians via BritishRedCross or you can donate to help the Ukrainian children via Unicef. 🇺🇦 Thank You 🇺🇦

I forgot how to configure the permissions for approval of the first message for a sub-forum (registered user)

If you mean you want one specific subforum to require registered users to have only their first post approved (when they can freely post anywhere else), there isn't a way to do that by default.
