[SOLVED] Making sense of category, forum, subforum, link?

Post by Shohreh »

Hello,

I read the User Guide, but am still not totally sure I understand what those four different items are, and when I should use which.

I understand a Category can only contain forums but not topics/posts. Other than that, I'm a bit in the dark.

Could someone summarize what they are and how to use them correctly?

Thank you.

This is a post.
It's in the topic that you made called 'Making sense of category, forum, subforum, link?'. Topics are sometimes (technically incorrectly) called threads.
That topic is in the forum called phpBB Discussion
That is in a category called Non-Support Specific
That is in the board which is phpBB as a whole

Categories allow you to group forums together that have a common area of interest.
For instance you might have a board about....... goldfish.
So you could have a category about the tanks to keep them in, with forums on how to build a tank, show us your tanks, plants, ornaments, pumps and filters.
Then you might have another category on Fish. Types of goldfish, other fish that work well, fish food, infections.

Subforums can be inside another forum. So for instance the 'other fish' forum could have subforums on individual breeds of fish.

A link forum is one that looks like a forum but is actually a link to somewhere else, like a blog, a wiki page, a shop etc.
