Using Poedit for phpBB files translation

Post by Bayou »

Hello all.

What do you say about opportunity to use Poedit for translation?

It can be a script or extension that scans actual English language files and prepare one or few files suitable for Poedit.
Than it should generate new or updated existing phpBB language files based on content retrieved from translators.

Also maybe all phrases can be divided in few blocks:
  1. for ordinary users;
  2. option 1 + MCP
  3. all phrases
Or maybe there is something similar to make translators work easier?

No I don’t like the idea. WordPress dropped official support for it a while back and for the better. It can be useful to manage languages personally but introducing those weird pot and po files added unnecessary complexity.

I saw previous discussion, that is different. Current idea is to keep using phpbb language files but also use something convenient for translators.

New script should convert phpbb files -> .po (or XLIFF) -> phpbb files translated.

It looks complicated but anyway should help to make translations easy. We use ~50 languages and at least 5 of them in phpbb where translated 10 years ago. This causes errors like viewtopic.php?t=2597511 and others.

What do you say about this? Maybe separately about the desires to use it and to implement.

It is true, that there are some languages are outdated. But no matter which tool is used, there needs to be always a volunteer to maintain it.

So this script needs to be written and tested? Who will do this?
