Migrating to new host - some issues!

Post by cedricthecat »

Hi

In a bid to save a lot of money in hosting our very small forum, we have just signed up for a package from Ionos

I've followed the instructions in the Knowledgebase (Transferring Your Board to a New Host or Domain) and was amazed that I actually succeeded! To a point...

There's a few issues:-
  • When submitting a post, it may or may not appear. If you click "refresh" on your browser, you get the message

"To display this page, your browser must send information that will repeat any action (such as a search or order confirmation) that was performed earlier"

and then on clicking resend the post will appear but with the text already posted and the same content in the post review area. If you simply click "back" after posting the post will be there on refreshing the page
  • The forum is not keeping members logged in
  • There are no notifications being sent
There may be more, but these are the obvious ones on testing. The original board is www.natterzone.com, and the new one is www.natterzone.net - the plan is, if everything works with the migration, to point .com to .net once it's all done

I'm sure that I'm doing something stupid, but would appreciate any advice to solve these issues!

Your board (.net) is not setting cookies.
Did you adapt the cookie settings to the new url? (and also change the cookie name)
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Your cookie domain should be .natterzone.net, note the leading dot. And cookie secure should be enabled as your using https.

Why not stay on the com and spare mor money with only one domain?
Also for Google it is better to stay on the old domain name!

I hadn't set the correct cookies, but have now thank you :)

I've tested the posting and it's still giving the same error, but presume the cookie element is more to do with remembering logons?

Good point! TBH, it's down to worry about messing everything up :(

A year ago, when our original hosting was about to expire, I tried moving (from LCN) to Hostinger, and things got very messy. In the end, LCN agreed a one-off lower fee for the year and we were able to plod on without issue. This year I couldn't get a discount, so (with two weeks to go) thought it'd be worth trying Ionos, as there's a £1 per month offer with a free domain for a year. I figured it was worth trying to migrate and then, if it didn't work, face paying more to stay where we are. As the .net was free, I hatched the plan of leaving that in place, but then pointing .com to it, as that seemed an easy option. Having said that, I wouldn't be averse to putting the .com back in place as the main site and letting the .net drop, but I would be worried about the changeover process!

Hi Janus

The new server is running 8.1 (with no other options) whereas the old one was on 7.4

^^ I've now updated to 3.3.10 but, although all looks well on opening the forum, I now can't access any posts without getting a blank screen!

All the forums are visible, and I can access UCP and ACP etc, just can't open posts :(

A blank page usually means a suppressed PHP error. Check the server error logs.

^^ Do you mean under "Maintenance", "Forum Logs"?

The newest one there is from November 2022 and says "Email error» EMAIL/PHP/mail()" so guessing this is not pertinent to what's happening now? :(

No, these would be found in the server's control panel (cpanel, plesk, etc).

If the logs aren’t available to you you can ask your host for them.

You need a redirect from http to https adding to .htaccess as your server is using https. Also, any links you make to your board should have https like https://natterzone.net (no need for www)

This should do it for you:

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
(Don’t duplicate RewriteEngine On)
