I must admit, I'm getting out of my comfort zone with this, but at least it's all on what is, effectively, a test database at present!

What are you trying to run in phpMyAdmin? (I see no need to use phpMyAdmin unless you would want to edit posts in the database to change http:// to https://
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Thanks Robert

I did wonder if that would be the case but went in gung ho with the wrong one!

I've done the htaccess now, but still unable to create or view posts.

Can't think what can be wrong now, although it'll probably turn out to be something really obvious...

I may have solved this, by fluke...

Reading elsewhere on this forum about similar issues, it suggested that an extension may be causing issues, so decided it was worth going through and systematically disabling any that related to creating or reading posts. There weren't many, and the first one I tried ("Advanced Polls"), once disabled, seems to have cured the problem! As it happens, we've never used this anyway, so not a huge issue, and if this means the forum now works, then we're OK :D

Just need to test for a few more days now, and then take the plunge and copy all the current topics and posts over!

Thanks to everyone who helped with advice on our migration - pleased to say that everything is working perfectly now!

Hopefully I can ask one more thing here, rather than start a new topic?

Now we are happy that the new installation is fully functioning, what is the best way to copy the current data over? There'll be no new members, so just really need the topics and posts to come over. Is it possible to export these two tables from old and merge into new, or is it simpler to just do the whole database? If the latter, do we need to wipe the database currently on the new installation, or can it be over-written?

Do the lot, it’s not easily possible to transfer bits and pieces.

Can you create a new database to import your old data to? (you will need to edit config.php to reflect the new database) Don’t forget to update the imported database.

Do the two databases (original and new) have the same prefix? If not any imported database won’t overwrite the existing database.

Delete the new database.
Import the old one.
Do the database update again.
That is the only way it works.

Edit: Mick was faster ;)

Thanks both - I had a feeling that doing the lot would make more sense than piecemeal!

Guess the best thing would be to delete the old database, and then create the new one with the same name (and thus the same credentials in config.php)? Although I've sorted that file once, so should be able to do it again! :)

Darn!

I deleted the old database, created a new one, made config.php correct for database name, username, password etc, but...

Now the forum is appearing but I can't log on!

I'm getting "The submitted form was invalid. Try submitting again."
