Noob database optimization question

Post by Jx80 »

Post approvals are taking a bit longer than normal so I was thinking of optimizing my mysql database, but every time I try to do something like this the universe finds a way of breaking my forum. I realize it's one click, but knowing my luck it's going to break something.

Anyway, I pulled up the database in phpMyadmin and all the OVERHEAD columns are blank except one which is only 600 bytes.

This means the DB does not need to be optimized at this time, correct? I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." so I'd rather not mess with it if I don't need to.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it on the other hand you do not have overhead.

High volume of posts, Server issue or capacity .
Your Ram etc

Are you on shard hosting? Is your forum large?
Is cloudlinux installed on your shared hosting and your usage is limited?

Yeah it's on shared for now. Forum is about 6000 users, 100k posts. It's very fast when browsing. I'm nowhere near my usage caps. Max CPU usage it ever goes is like 20% of my allowance, and all the other metrics like processes are well below max.

I recently noticed a slight delay when approving new user posts. Takes up to 10 seconds. However the regular posting, PMs, etc all are fast/normal.

So just to be clear, the fact that the overhead column is blank means it does not need to be optimized at this time? If not, I think I'll leave it alone for now.

Probably email notifications are slowing it down.

Email notifications aren't used. I always click that option off when approving all new posts.

Take a good database backup then try optimising your live one but I think you’ll be disappointed with the result.

Indeed. Some users might have forum notifications turned on too.

Good point. Any way to disable these globally?
