[ABD] Image Compressor

Post by bakasura »

Extension Name: Image Compressor
Author: Bakasura

Extension Description:
With this extension, you'll be able to automatically compress all PNG-type attached files that users send to your forum. It utilizes the pngquant library to accomplish this task, which can compress images by as much as 90%. This is the same technology used by the website tinypng.com.

Why do you need this extension? When you have a community that has stood the test of time, it's quite common to encounter broken images throughout your site. External image hosting providers can shut down (remember when Imageshack removed a massive number of images?), which is why hosting images on your server is a more reliable option. However, this might require a significant amount of space. With this extension, you'll be able to achieve substantial savings.

Extension Version: 1.0.0

Requirements: Only tested with phpBB 3.3.10, running under PHP 8.2.x
  • PHP function shell_exec enabled
  • pngquant binary in your system
Features:
  • PNG compression "on the fly" of attachments
  • Customizable pngquant path

I love the sound of this! I have a major png problem with my users 😅

Is this something that is able to run on its own, potentially? I am on shared hosting and don't have access to the installed system files.
