Member Registration Numbers?

Post by Aevik »

is there a facility in phpBB for member registration numbers?
typically displayed at the bottom of a user profile and posts in some community sites.

These numbers are used to identify members after username changes, as the number never changes.

You would need to request an extension.

I suspect it's a tricky one to do though because even the person who sets the board up is not user number 1 (as there are several bot accounts made as well). Also as accounts register, the user ID increments but even if those accounts were deleted, the next real account would not be number 2.

Yeah but the OP wants that number displayed in the profile (if I understand it correctly) but that's not necessarily the user's 'number'. i.e. they're not the 2221951st person to register on here. Just like they would not be account number 1 on the site they installed.

The order of numbers is irrelevant if all you want to do is identify someone after a name change. Along as the number doesn't change.
Could the number be put in a custom profile field?

There are 55 bots, so I suspect the first User ID numbers would start around 56 ( ? )

I just noticed that the user ID Numbers of members being quoted are shown in quotes

quote=KevC post_id=15985588 time=1700930100 user_id=123849

quote=Aevik post_id=15985240 time=1700853431 user_id=2221951

so my User ID number is 2221951, but I cannot seem to view this number anywhere other than by adding a quote to a post.

I agree but then it all looks a bit peculiar if the owner/admin is #2 and the next person is #48.

That's exactly right!

Nope. Except in the link at the top of the page when you enter a user name.
e.g. phpBB/adm/index.php?i=users&mode=overview&u=9

Nope. Probably because the number itself is largely irrelevant.
On boards where username changes are disallowed (this phpBB.com board for example) user ID numbers are not needed.

However, on boards where usernames can be changed on a daily (or hourly) basis, then user ID numbers become a real necessity.

But that's a very specific situation which 99% of boards wouldn't do so you'll need to request an extension.

I think we will need to request an ACP extension for this.
Otherwise each new registration would need to be correlated (manually) to a user ID number.

Our board is in that 1% percentile group of unrestricted username changes.

Incidentally..
I made a test by creating 2 new members, which have ID numbers : 58, and 59
Where my Administrator user ID number is 2
so it jumps from 2 to 58. I suspect newly registered team members with admin rights would have lower numbers ( ? )

User id itself is available, but even if it was displayed as you are asking.. Can you remember all those usernames & ids to identify everyone?
Based on everything i see in this topic.. username itself becomes pointless & it doesn't matter if it can be changed or not.
If focus is on id itself (id doesn't change).. then usernames can be ignored.
