PWS = Personal Web Server (on your local machine in this case)

So literally an in-house linux server.

5hocK wrote: Tue Nov 28, 2023 10:21 pm Why not request an extension that stops usernames being changed on previous posts. So the new username begins on the next post?
If a member changes their username, I believe all previous posts should reflect the change.

We may end up having to insist on usename changes 'by request' to the Administrator.
Where all changes are done in the ACP by the Administrator, or by a team of moderators.
Then every change can be logged and cross referenced in real time, user by user.
No changes could slip through the back door when no one is looking.
Also, requests for former usernames (of other users) would be denied, but possibly allowed as a reverted username (same user).

I will post an extension request for now, and we shall see if anyone takes on the request.

I checked the user ID numbers generated when activating new test members.
It seems that the Administrator is always ID nr. 2
then bots occupy ID numbers 3 to 57
So the first registered user has ID number 58, and the following users - every integer thereafter.

ID number 1 does not seem to exist.

A webserver, yes, Linux? not necessarily
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

In house? I think (no .. I know) there are more Windows users than Mac users and considering the large difference I'ld also expect more windows PWS's than Mac PWS's.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to use a windows server, or an osx server.
Apache .htaccess and .htpassrd files only work on a Linux server. Our site would not even function without these files.

How much bandwidth can be expected self-hosting a site using a PWS ?
I would expect a severe bottleneck and slow page loading with heavy site traffic.

Anonymous account?

Is this account accessible?

Tick the select anonymous user box
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

A home computer (whichever OS) is not optimised at all to run as a webserver open to the internet.
It's something you can do, but for a very limited number of users.
Also the contract with your ISP probably includes that it's forbidden to use your PC as a server allowing (multiple) incoming connections.
And aside from that, your bandwidth usage could drastically increase.

For the kind of forum you want (thousands of users?): don't even think about it.

Since guests are disabled on our platform, can the anonymous account be repurposed for another admin user??

Exactly as I expected.

So a PWS is for hosting extra logs, or databases?

No.
It's used by all of the people who have not logged in. That account must not be changed and must stay in the guest group.

This is all drifting way off topic.
Please keep 1 topic for one question.
If you need an extension, post it.

I'm beginning to think forum software is not what you need as the base for what you have in mind.

A PWS can be used for just about the same as your hosting package: but there are limitations.
I have a board on my PC that is open to the net (but unknown to all but a few friends). Lagging starts at 4 of 5 concurrent users, 10-12 is just about the limit.
PWS are perfect for offline development and testing and for keeping backups (and querying data offline).

Apologies to KevC (and others) for the off-topic: This deviation from the support topic subject should have been started in the General discussion forum (or perhaps in the phpBB discussion forum if it's relevant to phpBB).

This topic has drifted off topic and no longer ha any relevance to the original question.

To reiterate what has been said earlier, you will need an extension to do this in the way you imagine, so please post in Extension Requests stating EXACTLY what you want to be done.
