AFAIK phpBB 2.2.x was never released.
The last released version (I'm aware of) was 2.0.23 and while development of the successor was originally versioned as 2.2 ..., practically nothing of the original code was kept and it was decided to version the successor as phpBB 3.0

Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

you are correct...I'm running phpBB 2.0.22 and not 2.2.x (my mistake)
