Thanks for the replies guys, I am out of idea's and feel like it shouldn't be this difficult and I am going in circles. I would really like to get up to date on this new server and I would be happy to pay some one who can assist me with getting this resolved.

After completing the update this is what I see, all green, pretty positive.
phpbb.PNG
But in that window I read:
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.download_updated_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.update_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.show_file_status” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.diff_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.check_task” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_ftp_settings” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_files” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.file_updater_method” task

I am not familiar with things this deep but it seems it has skipped all of these things and all these things look to be in regards to "files" so I am thinking this is my problem since none of my attachments, images, avatars, etc appear and Google Dev tools shows errors for file.php on my web pages.

Should it be skipping those tasks?

According to the top 4 messages everything’s as it should be. Is the board behaving itself?

Hey Mick, Thanks for chiming in. Yes, everything else seems to be functioning fine. It's like the path to the files isn't correct or something simple like that but I am not at all familiar with php. Check out this url https://ded1729.inmotionhosting.com/~pl ... hp?t=34897 and you can see none of the attachments load, also no avatars load, it is like any thing fetched with /download/file.php? won't work...if that makes any sense.

Your Cookie domain .plasmaspider.com is incorrect, it appears that is from the previous installation. Knowledge Base - Fixing incorrect cookie settings.

I would have never found that, thank you for looking into this. That domain is the real domain for this site and once I have the site reproduced and running on this new phpBB version on this new server I will point everything to the new server. I will visit the link you provided and see what I can do. Thanks Mick.

Strange thing is that I'm not seeing any cookies set: what are you cookie settings ?

Yes, as you probably did a database_update only.
The strange thing is that when clicking on some of the file names (they are links), a message appears: The selected attachment does not exist anymore.
On the other hand, some attachments do show up as images.
So I suggest you check whether the images not being displayed are present or not.

Do you have a backup of that directory?
If Yes then re-upload one of those missing images to see whether that then shows up or not.

Mick saw that before I did (the cookie issue).
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

It could be the paths to the images are wrong due to incorrect settings as per above.

Thanks guys, I changed the cookie settings to the following
cookie.PNG
Then I clicked the "Delete Cookies" link at the bottom of my board. logged back in again and still see the problem.

But your cookie domain has to reflect where the installation is now not what it will be. Or, wait until you’ve finished doing what you’re doing, then make the corrections.

Makes perfect sense. The cookie domain must have copied over from my actual site. I have since changed it and attached the new settings to my previous post and seeing the same problem with images not showing loading. Hopefully those cookie settings will be ok until I get the switch over to the server complete and I can go back to those old cookie settings.

I do have backups, which directory are you referring to? The images directory or the files directory?

Do the images or attachments actually exist on your server?

EDIT: I am guessing you are referring to the "physical_filename" phpbb uses, for example 45751_7ad91c6e7c26c6abe39ceb10da4edc14 in which case no the filenames fore the images that don;t load do not exist in the /files directory. Strange thing is search the /files directory on the live site which is loading images and I can't find the file name there either. What am I missing here?

This is the strangest thing. The same files missing from the /files directory (example=2_6bb5e32349339341bae3cddf321d9c65) on the new site cannot be found in the old sites /files directory but the old site still loads the attachment. I thought maybe they were cached so just be safe cleared the cache in the ACP and tried from a device that has never been on my site and the attachments load. How is this even possible?

Ok,I appreciate you guys taking the time to chime in. In the end I am a fool, you guys were right, files were missing. I didn't know how many there should have been and could not comprehend how they could be missing when I was copying the ENTIRE files directory. Turns out Filezilla was only displaying 7998 out of the 93,000+ files, a limitation set by my server from what I understand. So I succeeded on getting my board moved to a new server and functioning properly on the latest version of phpBB and it appears to be working well. Just need to get these missing files copied over. Appreciate the help and I am posting this in the event that someone else with my profound mis-understanding of all thing server and php related might see it and save themselves some time and embarrassment.
