To many redirects error [SOLVED]

Post by Fast_Eddie »

At this time I am unable to connect to my board. It was installed in January and running smooth up until a few days back. Now getting this error:

Code: Select all

This page isn’t working right now www.xxxxxxxx.com redirected you too many times.
Try deleting your cookies.
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
I tried deleting cookies which I'm pretty sure worked because i had to verify/logon with other websites I'm on.
Then I figured out I can still get on with my phone. So I tried using firefox and it worked fine for a few days but is now doing the same thing as edge and chrome. I'm afraid to use my phone much longer in fear it will do the same thing. I found this topic in support This page isn’t working right nowwww.tt ... _REDIRECTS
And it seems to be the same thing I am experiencing. It's suggesting to re-do the config.php file. So would this be my 1st step?
Thank you! :)

Shit, sorry I didn't see

What happened on your board to cause this error message to appear?
A recent change?
Have you asked your host if there have been any changes on his side?

Nothing happens by chance

So the 1st occurrence happend last week. I was banning IP's (from Hong Kong) and think maybe there might be to many. When i added the last one this error screen poped up. I was able to get back on with a different browser (firefox) and deleted about 10 of them. But the same problem came back with firefox out of the blue. did not change anything

What method did you use to ban these Chinese IPs?
Try deleting all these occurrences, clearing the cache, you should find your forum

Found this in my HTACCESS file. These are the IPs i have set to BAN in the ACP. If i took these out of the HTACCESS file would it crash the board if there still active as BAN in the ACP?

Disable the extension that manages .htaccess from the database, then remove these IPs from your file from your board server
And clear the cache

That did the trick! Thank you!

So what is the limit on the # of banned IPs you can have through the ACP menu ?
My board gets 400-500 hits a day from HONG KONG

There is no limit but banning IP's is only helpful for specific reasons e.g. it might be the first step if you have troll user and you can hope they don;t know anything about proxies. Any time you ban a IP set a time limit like a week. Adding too many IP's to ban list will slow your forum down becsue it will be checked for every page load.

Even doing it with .htaccess can begin causing issues becsue that list needs to be processed by server for every request.

Thank you very much for the info! I figured it would slow the board down. But didn't think it would cause this mess.I had about 25 IPs on the ban list. Really all i was doing is try to slow them down because I know IPs change. Its back in working order now with 33 guests/Bots whatever they are online now as i type this
