Banned IP with wildcard issue?

Post by cgn1954 »

Hi, hope this is the right place to post...

I've been trying to get rid of aggressive bots for a week or so, individual bots can have 250 connections, completely crazy.

Well, I've noticed that wilcard 3.3.3.* works but 3.*.*.* doesn't, see image. Addresses in the range 3.*.*.* are passed through. (I have not tried with two wildcards, 3.3.*.*).

Anyone by chance who has seen this this, any ideas, solution?

I appear: I know it excludes a lot of addresses but that's OK because there are no 3-addresses in Sweden.

This doesn't stop them coming to the server. You need to use your server settings to block them there or ask the hosts to do it if you give them the IPs.

Hi, thank's a lot...

Well - first I do not have access to the server, it is a cloud service.

Then, the banning is obviously working, the amount of bots has gone down from at max 299 (in 5 minute logging) to 5-10 bots (10 minutes).

My little wonder is why the 1-wildcard syntax seems to bee working but not the 3-wildcard one.

A bit illogical maybe...

Take it off again and see if it goes back up. Your hosts may have noticed anyway and implemented a server side block.
That ban only stops them from registering, not actually coming to the site.

Nice reply... I'll test this in the coming week. :-)

You can try 3.*, in any event it's not very useful for controlling bots because the script still needs to execute. It will just be another IP range next week.
