The Russians are Coming!

Post by John Little »

I'm not actually complaining but my board is constantly plagued by Russians trying to register. Every registration has to be manually activated so it's not a problem. In fact it quite amuses me to "select all" and delete 30 - 50 at a time.

I've got the standard capture image and keep adding ip and email bans but they keep on coming. Must be a few hundred every day. But how easy is it for them to go through the registration process? It can't be actual humans, surely? It must be bots of some kind.

The wobbly letter captchas were beaten a long long time ago.
There's no real point banning specific IPs and emails.

Had a look at that but I can't see the relevant Q&A section in my ACP. Is it the same on phpbb 3.3.8? Or is that just for 3.0

Yes it's been in since 3.1.0 I think.

How to configure Q&A
  1. Administration Control Panel (ACP) > Spambot countermeasures> Installed plugins > click the dropdown box and select Q&A (it will be greyed out)
  2. Click the configure button then click add
  3. Add your question and answer (you need a Q&A for each language you have installed) click submit
  4. Click "back to previous page" then click "back"
  5. Select Q&A from the dropdown box (again)
  6. Click submit at the bottom of the page.
  7. Done.

Found it! Thank you, Kev!

:)

Edit:

Blimey! That certainly sorted out those Russians, not "one" this morning! I'm starting to miss them already!

I've just had to disable my "contact us/contact admin" thing because the crafty Russians have been using it to spam me!

You could try the Obscure contact us or the Contact admin extensions if you wish to have a contact us option or just leave it turned off if you don’t.

Hello,

there are possibilities via .htaccess (ISO code Geo-Names is decisive) and whether the *module is available in your (host)-package.

Example:

Code: Select all

<IfModule mod_maxminddb.c>
MaxMindDBEnable On
MaxMindDBFile DB /usr/local/share/maxminddb/GeoLite2-Country.mmdb
MaxMindDBEnv MM_COUNTRY_CODE DB/country/iso_code
SetEnvIf MM_COUNTRY_CODE ^(CN|JP|RU) BlockCountry
Deny from env=BlockCountry
</IfModule>
Read more: https://www.geonames.org/countries/
*)Ask perhaps your host before ...., - some things can be more complicated or updated ISO codes are also relevant.

Regards
Best regards
