[Solved] Edit and Post buttons not showing after 3.3.11 upgrade

Having solved my avatar problem with the help of this Support Forum, may I ask for some help with a similar issue. I searched the forum for answers, but what I found was usually relevant for 3.1 or 3.2, or it involved other Styles than Prosilver. Here's the basics:

What is your level of experience? Comfortable with PHP and phpBB
What actions did you take (updating your board; installing a MOD, style or extension; etc.) prior to this problem becoming noticeable? Updated the board manually, using a downloaded package, meticulously following the Upgrade Guide (https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... date_full/).
Please describe your problem.

(1) After upgrading from 3.3.8 to 3.3.11 the forum works OK, but buttons in Posts and in the Edit screen do not display. Instead, empty placeholders are shown. See circled elements in pictures below.
(2) Smilies are listed beside the Edit window, but not shown, nor are they clickable.

Are you sure you uploaded all the files?
Otherwise upload them again. Except config.php and .htaccess

Having seen earlier discussions about similar errors, I suspected it might be related to FontAwesome, but did not know where to look. This helps!
I'll look into it and report back.

The /assets folder contains a .htaccess file, saying 'deny from all'. When I disable that file by renaming it, all icons appear on the forum as they should. Hurray!

But... is it safe to disable that .htaccess file from /assets? Should it be there at all?
