After thinking about it sometime...

I believe the 'install' file was running the 'template' file from my pc instead of uploading it. So when i deleted the 'install' folder the new install no longer had the 'template' file to run off from. When I re-uploaded the install folder the link to run the 'template' folder off my pc was restored and the site worked again.
I think its a glitchy 'install' file that is the culprit.
It is telling Filezilla (that I trust) to 'run' instead of upload.

I'll check my cron file because other things have become glitchy. Thank you for chiming in!

So I don't believe in incriminating the install file, especially since you downloaded the installation pack here
I used the download package from phpBB.com

I seriously doubt that as I've succesfully updated (and upgraded) about 20 boards to 3.3.12 without issues.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Your using FileZilla is propably the culprit, it has to be in binary mode for uploading files otherwise there can happen glitches with the files which lead to unexpected errors.

Thank you for the tip on 'binary mode'. I didn't know about that option.
