Banning email domain

Post by Hervé »

Hi,
I always have problem when phpBB tries to send a mail to a specific domain namely @free.fr.
I can ban new registrations via Users and Groups - User Security -> Ban emails.
If I understand this doesn't change anything for already registered users.
Is there a way to ban their email or to unchek their notifications by email ?
Thanks in advance

Isn't it better to solve that problem?

Sure, I tried, without success.

I have lots of messages from my host saying
I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.
<[email protected]> failed: host mx1.free.fr (212.27.48.7) said: 451 too many errors detected from your IP (x.x.x.x), please visit http://postmaster.free.fr/

The link given does not allow me to resolve the problem, I sent several emails to free.fr : no response.
I've seen at least one other forum that banned free.fr email users so I plan to do the same.

Because more than one year later the problem you point to is not solved
I can prevent new users to register with a free.fr email adress
I cannot prevent phpBB to try to send notification mails to already registered members with email in that domain.
janus_zonstraal wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2024 8:30 amAnd your mails are 100% correct?
It is not my email but that of a member, the email is sent because the member requested to receive notifications by email and it works well, that is to say that I never receive a warning from my host saying the email could not be sent
except for the free.fr domain and only for that one
reason why I would like to prohibit new members from registering with an email address in this domain
and also do something for those who are already registered.

Indeed and bear in mind that in the main these issues are not because of phpBB, phpBB does not send email as such but uses whatever services are provided by the server.

When phpBB sends me a notification mail I receive it and get no warning from my host
I guess it is the same for all other members with mail in the domains gmail, hotmail, skynet, ... so I suppose my server is sending mails the correct way
the ONLY problem is when phpBB sends a mail to a free.fr domain mail.

One solution could be to uncheck in the DB email notifications to all members with a free.fr email adress, last column of this window

Have you thought about PMing the users using the free email service explaining the situation and request they change their email address? You could also post a sticky if you wish.

Yes I did (PM) : only one has unchecked his email notifications.
Does somebody knows in which phpBB table it is registered ?
Sticky ?

Why not just check it.

Try
user_notify
user_notify_pm
user_notify_type

People always want to over complicate everything. As Mick said above.. only way to solve the issue, is to fix the root cause and not the branch.
If issue is an e-mail address, then request/force e-mail address change.

As already said it is checked 30 times each day, it works nice, except for free.fr domain.

How can I oblige somebody to modify his email adress ?

It's easy.. Notify them about address change. If request will be ignored, just deactivate account until it will be solved.

Even if you change something in database, user can always change it back in UCP. Of course you can block that change by using an extension, but it will create a new issue for other users.
