Modify the forum creation form on PHPBB

Post by JeanJean26 »

Hello,
I have just created a forum with PHPBB 3.3.12.
When creating a forum in forums/create a new forum, I'm surprised that the application doesn't offer the option of uploading an image in ‘Forum image’ and only offers a text field. Is there an extension to solve this problem? Or perhaps if someone can explain to me how it works and in which folder this form is stored?

Thanks in advance. Cheers.

You can store them in root/images/
In that directory you can create a new one forum_icons (it’s up to you) so you have them organised.
Then at the forums creation you just insert images/forum_icons/your_image.ext

Thank you for your reply. Yes, that's what I understood. But I'd like to set up a simpler system for someone who doesn't have as many facilities and who won't have access to the site files. What I'd like and what would seem more obvious to me is a system for uploading an image that would be stored in the images folder for example, an input file instead of the current poor text field.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Definitely sounds like you'll need an extension for that. I actually didn't realise that you had to upload the image separately and enter the image path yourself in the ACP. It would be good to change that in core to be perfectly honest and make the UX better.

Thanks for your answer. Yes, but I didn't find an extension who would make that job. Any ideas ? Thanks.

If you can't find an existing extension then you would have to look at hiring someone to make an extension for you.

I suspect it doesn't exist because it's something you only ever really do once when you make the forum so it seems a lot of work for a one shot use.

Well, given how humans work (notoriously fickle, they are) it's quite possible that some people will want to change the images at times. I agree that it really should have a handy input, but OTOH it's not a critical UX bug. Just a bit of an inconvenience.

The obvious workaround, if you don't have access to FTP, is to up the image to a site like MediaFire and then link to that.

I don't think you can use mediafire etc because the link it asks for is relative to the phpBB directory.

This is one of the reasons why phpBB is fast and light.

@KevC: Hmm, that's a bit of a nuisance. It would be more muppet-proof if they could just link any image that's online. Most of them know how to do that, but a surprising number (mainly beginners) seem to get bamboozled by FTP.
