Migrating an old phpBB forum to new site

Post by 57Chevy_Jeff »

Greetings. I am trying to help someone migrate an existing phpBB discussion board to a new website. Both the old website and new are Wordpress, but the old website is about 10 years old. Both the old phpBB and Wordpress versions are about 9 or 10 years old.

The new website has the most recent version of Wordpress and php, and we will install the most recent version of phpBB. Although all WordPress content for the website was eventually migrated and now works on the new site, unfortunately, the webhost tech support failed in migrating the phpBB discussion board successfully.

The original style, lanparty, is no longer supported or can be found. So we accept we will have to install a new theme and go from there.

The question is this....is it possible to go into the File Manager in the old cPanel and using FTP downloads, download the database files then migrate those files to the new website such that the previous membership and posts can be migrated into the new phpBB discussion board?

If so, what specific files would those be, and where can I find them in the File Manager.

Thank you.

The database is not in "files". You would have to export the database using your database tool -- phpMyAdmin or whatever.

First do a complete backup of the original site so that in case something goes wrong you can always do a full restore. Plus, it's a good idea to make regular backups in case something happens.

I would probably do the migration of the original site with it's current version. Make sure it is working on the new host, and then do the upgrade to the latest version. Technically you could do it in one step but if something goes wrong it is harder to trouble shoot as you may not be certain if the issue was with the migration or the update.
