Google Restricts Adblockers on Google Chrome

Suffice to say, Google Chrome is changing its extension framework supposedly for increased privacy and being lighter on resources, but in practice, it does neither. The whole point seems to be to limit adblockers as Google and other companies do not particularly like people blocking ads. While a new version of uBlock has been made to work on the new framework, it will be significantly less effective.

I'm using Firefox so I will not be impacted by this, but having a working adblocker is pretty much essential in this day and age, and I certainly am opposed to attempts to limit them. Without one, much of the internet is practically unusable, with ads becoming more prominent, invasive, lower quality, and numerous.

At this point, I do recommend anyone using Chrome who uses Adblock to look into other browsers. Specifically ones that are not Chromium based.

These articles concern UBlock, not adblockers in general.

Google is hostile to adblockers and content-blockers. Their whole V3 Manifest is actually going to eventually restrict all of them.

UBlock being one of the most popular adblockers is simply the first to go/most famous example. Google is not going to stop at just that one extension.

Also, the first article in my OP does mention that it is not going to just be a problem for UBlock.

All three articles are concerning Manifest V3. Adblock Plus, for instance, has been V3 compliant for months.

Yeah, and being V3 compliant makes adblockers less effective, as per the articles.

I’ve been using Safari for a while and whilst it’s definitely not as good as Chrome, it’s good enough to use as an alternative if you’re just browsing.

It all depends what you mean by “not as good”. I prefer Safari for 90% of whatever I’m doing, I find it unfussy, safe and easy to get on with and I dislike Chrome so it tends to be horses for courses.
