Problem with update from 3.3.0 to 3.3.13

Post by kapaf69628 »

Hello!

I tried to update my discussion forum from version 3.3.0 to 3.3.13 (I've never done this before) following the steps provided here: https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... date_full/

Unfortunately, in step 8, I didn’t see the message "No valid update directory was found, please make sure you uploaded the relevant files"; instead, the page ".../install/app.php/update" loaded "normally".

I'm not sure if it’s necessary to run the command "php ./bin/phpbbcli.php db:migrate --safe-mode" in this case. Also, I don't understand what "From your board's root, execute the following command" means.

I can’t proceed with "Update database only" because when I click "Update", it takes me to "Update files", and I'm hesitant to click on "Update files" (only after this step can I access "Update database").

I’d appreciate any help. My site is currently running PHP version 7.4.

You don't need to use the CLI if you do the update via webpage. Updating via CLI is just another way of doing it and can be more reliable with very large boards to prevent timeouts.

Did you follow the previous directions exactly and did you upload the files via FTP (and in binary mode, especially if using Filezilla) and not a host provided interface?

Also, make sure you have a backup before doing any updates just in case something goes wrong.

I went through all the steps again (that is, 2nd time), but the same problem persists.

I restored all the files from the backup, and the forum was working as before (version 3.3.0).

I downloaded FileZilla (with the appropriate option checked, as in the instructions), and followed all the steps once more (that is, 3rd time). Still the same problem.

I go to /install/app.php/update, click UPDATE, and it takes me to step 4 (update files), where I see the following long message:
Deleted files » View/Hide file list

The following files do not exist in the new version. These files have to be deleted from your installation. STATUS_DELETED

adm/style/acp_ext_actions.html

assets/javascript/jquery-3.4.1.min.js

Modified files » View/Hide file list

The following files are modified and do not represent the original files from the old version. The updated file will be a merge between your modifications and the new file. STATUS_MODIFIED

styles/prosilver/theme/colours.css

styles/prosilver/theme/forms.css

New files » View/Hide file list

The following files currently do not exist within your installation. These files will be added to your installation.

Not modified files » View/Hide file list
[LONG LIST]

The following files are not modified and represent the original phpBB files from the version you want to update from.
Should I click "Update files"? Or try something different? Can you help me?

Very odd. If you deleted the files on the server as instructed and upload v3.3.13, that includes the completely new styles folder/files so not sure why it would say those files are modified?

Just to be 100% clear, you downloaded the full package install of v3.3.13, not the patched/changed/etc versions? And you are following the "Full Install" update guide?

You also deleted the:
store/install_config.php
store/io_lock.lock
files if still present from a prior update attempt?

Thanks!

Deleting those two files made a huge difference—first problem solved! However, I’m a bit disappointed this isn’t mentioned in the main instructions.

Now, I’m facing a new issue. The update process is stuck at 48% (it took just a second to get there), and I’ve been waiting for several minutes. What should I do? Should I go back to the “update” page, or is there another step? I don’t want to risk corrupting the database.

The database backup is only 70KB, so it’s a very small file and should ideally process quickly.

Here’s what’s happening:

Glad the file deletion helped. BTW- it is in the update directions: https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... ide/minor/

How big is your forum? Mine is about 25,000 posts total and the database is 92 MB. It's not 1:1 ratio but if your database is only 70kb, you would expect less than 100 posts all things being equal (which they are not as it may be compressed and search database can take up a lot of space, but still).

My database takes under 5 seconds to update so yours should definitely not take minutes.

But the link from the download page: https://www.phpbb.com/downloads/3.3/update gets me to https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... date_full/ - so I didn't see that page you've shown.

So, what should I do? Try to update database (if possible) again? Or should I assume everything was "100%" even though I didn't see it? It's still "48%" ;)

My forum is now showing:
Information

Please delete, move or rename the install directory before you use your board. If this directory is still present, only the Administration Control Panel (ACP) will be accessible.
And I can login to the ACP, where I have 2 big red boxes:
Warning

Please delete, move or rename the install directory before you use your board. If this directory is still present, only the Administration Control Panel (ACP) will be accessible.
and
Default charset is improperly configured

default_charset must be set to UTF-8. You can check the current value on the PHP information page.
Should I assume, that everything went fine? Can I do some test if the database is OK (how?)?

P.S. Sorry for the 2nd post, but I've just seen that admin log shows:
Anonymous 03 Nov 2024, 20:36 Updated Database from version 3.3.0 to version 3.3.13
and I see in ACP:
Board version: 3.3.13 [ Re-Check version ]

if database update completed to 100% you can delete via ftp the install folder or rename it

you need to login your host control panel and find that field in the php ini editor and change to recommended setting

Ok, so I assumed that the database has updated 100%. I deleted the install folder and reached out to the administrator regarding the UTF-8 setting on the server side.

This topic can be considered closed, and next time I'll try performing this database update step in Chrome (maybe it's a Firefox issue that it only displayed up to 48%).

I would still be cautious. When the database update is completed, not only does the progress bar go to "100%" but a new message pops up saying "The database update was successful."

Make sure you keep those backups just in case.

But how can I go back to the previous version now?

With files and database?

If "easy" tutorials of phpbb were so unpredictable for me, I'm very afraid of going back now.

Is there some reliable tutorial how to do this?

You would do a restore from your backups that you made prior to doing the update.... which I hope you did.

Yes, I have backups (files, database).

But what is the EXACT procedure? Where can I find it?

Minor Updates Within 3.3.x
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
