I am looking to update my board from 3.3.0 to 3.3.14 using the Automatic Update Package because honestly I do not recall if I have made changes to core phpBB files.
Anyway, the instructions state to upload the /install and /vendor directories from the package to begin but these folders exist and have files in them and I am getting conflicting information (I think) on what to do.
I read that you should not delete the contents of the /vendor folder as that will crash your board. Is that correct and if so do I overwrite what is in that folder? Or do I clear both the /install and /vendor folders and upload the package contents?
There isn't a /install folder on the server, so you can't delete him.
You have to delete or rename the install folder after the update, if you don't do that you can't use your board.

That's quite easy to check: Use a file/directory compare program and compare you're fileset to a clean fileset of phpBB same version nr.

As to the "Automatic Update Package" ... it's actually Advanced Update Package specifically because it requires a couple of actions that are not part of the "general" update procedure.
Do yourself a favour and check first if you fileset was changed in anyway. If not: just use the full update or the changed files update package.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.
Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana.
This also does three window comparison. You can load up stock 3.3.0 in first window, your 3.3.0 files in second Window and 3.3.14 in third window. The first window is just so you can identify your edits in second window. Merge your edits in second window into third window. No need for using advanced update.

Take the advice of others and find out. If you haven't made any mods to the code, save yourself a lot of potential headache with this upgrade and future ones by using the preferred "Full Package" updated method. If you do have mods to the original code, maybe even consider reverting those back to stock if you can.
Also, in the future I would try to keep the board up to date as new versions are released as there tends to be less issues when going one version up vs 14.
