A 16-year-old unsolved mistake

Post by halil16 »

After "merged posts into topic", the previous topic's title does not change.

Should it?
I think this is a case by case situation, and automatic topic_title editing will probably not be an optimal solution.

The link points to a phpBB 3.0 topic.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

I expressed it incompletely. It cannot be changed. As a result (maybe when the previous post is deleted), editing the first post does not change the topic title.

The extension Smart Subjects - Contribution Details is quite useful for these situations.
Smart Subjects wrote:Features:
  • Editing the first post's subject will update all matching replies to the new title.
  • Replies with a different subject that a user already changed or posts merged into a topic from elsewhere will not be affected and will retain their unique subject titles.
  • Admins and moderators will see a posting option when editing a first post to update all reply subjects (including non-matching subjects) to match the first post's subject.
  • The last post's subject displayed on the Board index page will also be updated.
  • Forum based permissions allow you to control which forums and users can use Smart Subjects
  • There is nothing to set up or configure. Just install it and relax.

After the merge the topic indeed gets the title from the other topic but after editing the title is set correctly.

Frankly: "merged posts into topic" doesn't provide enough information to determine whether a topic_title should change or not.

Case: if a post (or posts) from a(n) (origin) topic is/are merged into another existing (destination) topic and the original first post of the destination topic stays the first post, then I see no reason to change the topic title of the destination topic (that's assuming that the original topic title was to the point).

IMHO Topic titles should also be relevant (to the subject discussed).

I'll second that! If it helps OP's issue this could be helpful.

After our forum's database ate itself many years back, this tool saved us big time! Probably 40% of our posts were missing, even though they still tied out to their topic. To verify we got all our historic topic titles restored, I exported the Posts database to a spreadsheet resorting the database looking for posts without titles. With them identified, it just meant dedicating time to fixing them via the forum.

Heck, I still keep it around, since some of our members like creating titles that air nonsensical click-bate or incorrectly titled to their topic's content. It's a very handy tool, indeed!
