New users posting without approval

Post by ttfan »

I've been messing around with my settings to stop Newly Registered users from posting without approval. This is to try and stop users that appear to register manually and posting a bunch of spammy posts full of links.

These are the setting I have, but I must be missing something:

User Registration: New member post limit: 2
Permissions > Group Forum Permissions > Newly Registered Users > Forum > Misc > Can post without approval = Never

What I find is that a new user registers and posts a bunch of spammy posts, and they are in the "Registered User Group", and there are no posts waiting for approval. So somehow they posted as a New Registered user, and want straight to Registered User without any post being approved.

I've probably missed something really simply, so hopefully someone can help and tell me what to check?

Support for phpBB 3.0 is limited to support in upgrading

Since you're using 3.0.9 (according to prosilver) I suggest you check your group/forum permissions for all forums.
And since you're using phpBB 3.0 you could also use the STK to do some checks on your board.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Thank you. Yes I do appreciate that, I just thought (hoped) that this might be a something relevant to all forum versions. I don't have the skills or resources to upgrade at this time unfortunately. The forum has been active for almost 20 years.

Yes I've gone through the different forums permissions, and they're all set to 'never', so I was thinking there may be something overriding these settings, or a setting somewhere else that I might just have missed. the forum hasn't had much modifications, mainly cosmetic ones, so I doubt any mod could have caused this.

Are these spammy ones registering through Tapatalk? We have seen numerous problems with that extension giving new users the wrong permissions.

That's interesting, I didn't even know you could register through Tapatalk. Is there any way to tell?

I don't know. I have never used Tapatalk -- I have just seen the problems reported here. We have seen new Tapatalk users given Global Moderator permissions. Perhaps these users are approving their own posts.
