INSTANT Find your MOD here

Post by smithy_dll » Sat Mar 26, 2005 2:44 am

As you might know, alot of MOD Requests in this forum are actually people who are unable to find a MOD rather than those who have an idea for a MOD that doesn't exist yet.

Most MODs requested do exist in the phpBB.com library containing over 340 validated MODs and over 2000 in current, halted or past development.

So it's likely among all those MODs the one your looking for is there, it's just how to find it.

1. First try using the phpBB.com MOD search function.

If that doesn't get the results you wanted, do not despair your MOD could still be out there.

I have created a searchable index of most MODs here sorted by relative popularity. Just place in a couple of keywords and your away. I will try and keep the index updated weekly. (the search is a thread title search which the phpBB search function isn't capable of, it automatically does partial matches on all words, order is unimportant)
http://david.smigit.com/mdd/
If I want a MOD to resize avatars, I would enter the words "avatar" and "resize" separated by a single space, and would get the following results:
http://david.smigit.com/mdd/?keyword=avatar+resize
Dark green results have been validated against the latest version of phpBB
Light green results have been validated against earlier versions.
Washed out green are development MODs now in the MODDB so look for a light or dark green MOD with the same title among the listings.
Yellow MODs are in various stages of development depending on the state.
Information is in a washed out blue.
And Red MODs have been discontinued and the thread likely locked, so if you run into problems your unlikely to get any support at all. The best MODs are the green ones.
This method of searching is now very simillar to the phpBB.com MOD Search feature.

If you still can't find the MOD you may want a search with a bit more power. This is when we turn to google or msn search. To constrict your results to phpBB.com enter site:www.phpbb.com/phpBB/ into the seach box and then any search terms you wish to find as you normally would.

Remember before requesting, to search as your MOD is likely to already be out there.

So how to people find results for you when your too lazy to look yourself? They follow a process simillar to the one listed above.

The last tip I will give is if you are searching for a MOD using a word, think if there are any other synonyms that the MOD could be listed under and try searching for those too. And also make sure your spelling the word correctly in the first place.

phpBB.com now has a dedicated MOD Search page.

MOD Search
Here you can search all the modifications that have been released or are still in development* by their title.

* Only MODs that have been released by the phpBB MOD team (listed as being in the 'MOD Release Announcements & Support' forum) are officially tested for security and stability. MODs still in development (listed as being in the 'MODs in Development' forum) are not recommended for use on a live site.

Might help a lot of users, if they take the time to read this topic :)

Anyway, great initiative

This page doesn't work very well. It doesn't work with general keywords (only with specific MOD names), the ones that have hardly any connection to the search appears at the top of the relevance list, and the search is awfully slow.

simply: WRONG place to ask for support. Ask for support at the MOD's topic here, or if the MOD wasn't downloaded here, ask for support at that site.

Great job--this new MOD finder is *very* handy! :)
One suggestion: is it just me or is there no color code legend for the results: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/mod_search.php?mode=results
Many thanks. :)

There should be a color code legend, I see one.

The problem I have with the search is that the relevency is messed up. I could type "close topic with post" and the first thing I'd get would be the Attachment MOD, followed by Cash MOD, Profile Control Panel, etc., and the MOD I'm looking for (which is called Close Topic with Post) would be in the middle of Page 5!

I think the search results need to be optimized to be a little more related to the search query.

Are you selecting "Search for all terms" or "Search for any terms or use query as entered"? If you select the latter, then of course you are going to get MODs with "close", "topic", and "post" in them. If you choose the first one, then you will only get MODs with all three of those words in them.

Of course it is, that's why it was posted by a MOD Team member.

Anyways, here's a bump for anyone not knowing about this thread...

Note that this forum is for MOD Requests; this forum is not a "please find this MOD for me" or "I'm looking for this, can you give me a link" forum.

This isn't a support topic. As for the last question, actually reading the first post in this topic will help.
