Ok now... What exactly is "Gzip" and what does it

Post by ~Ally~ »

I'm just curious. I'm pretty sure I already know what it is (I'm thinking similar to a regular ZIP file) but does it require decompressing stuff to view the board?
my database is only up to about 5.5 MB (compared to 19 with Ikonboard!!!) so i don't think i need to compress things...especially if it causes more bandwidth... 8O

gzip

gzip compression is decompressed on most modern web browsers so you dont have to worry about it. actually using gzip will increase the speed of the download of your pageviews and reduce bandwidth -- any board that doesnt turn this on doesnt want to save money :)

I won't into gzip deeply, but basically what it does is compress files before sending to the browser. This is used to reduce the amount of bandwidth used by the html files though it does increase server load. Other things with it include: only works for txt, html and php (not images as they are already compressed) and some servers do not support gzip. Apache servers have a module called mod_gzip (I think) and if this is set on, then putting gzip on or off in phpBB will make no difference as pages will be gzipped already.

I would recommend that you enable it and if it causes you any problems, disabled it again. Will save on expensive bandwidth.

thanx so much! i turned it on, and will have to rely on those without cable-fast modems to tell me if there's a difference :D

i really hope it helps with bandwidth. my whole site generates about a gig a day (i have 30/month allowance right now...)

how much of that is the Board i can't really be sure
