New users not getting a confirmation email when registering.

Post by hAppY pAppY »

I have my configuration set so that users can register without my approval. Lately, I've been getting quite a bit of email from people saying they didn't recieve any sort of email confirmation when they registered.

When looking them up by username after they register, I'm able to make them active manually, but this is getting a little old having to go in and approve each new member.

can anyone suggest any ways to fix this?

thanks.

Try to register a new account and see if you get an email. Check the junk folder too. Report back.

phpBB email is being sent as junk mail, how to change?

Post by nikosama »

I know hotmail receives all the confirmation email as junk mail. What controls this. Is it something in the header? How can I change this so my users get the email normally?

Likely, other people on your SMTP server are sending SPAM emails. People have reported it and hotmail filters all emails coming from the server. People have switched their hosts because of this.

I will do some tests..

Post by nikosama »

hmm although I have a smtp server, I don't have it configured for phpBB, so I am assuming php sends this out? I will go test now. and see for sure what the header says when sending, and also configure it for smtp and see if there is a difference. (its been too long since i look at the configuration page. ><)

thanks, niko

I registered an account to a yahoo.com email. Yahoo received it as Bulk mail. Here is the header from the email sent:

In phpBB admin configuration

Use SMTP Server for email IS SET TO NO *
Say yes if you want or have to send email via a named server instead of the local mail function

========================
Test2 setup SMTP server, created a second account;.. Same thing

Validation email was received in BULK mail folder.

=====================================
Test 3 .. In yahoo, I told it the other email was not spam... Re registered acounts using SMTP mail server and with it set to NO. both recieved into my inbox.

I'm going to send a normal email with my SMTP server and see where it goes

Sending normail messages through my smtp server went to my inbox
------------------------------------

Trys editing the phpBB subject line to see if that makes a difference

be back soon

All the major free email places and many others pick up phpBB emails as spam, there is not much to do about it. It is due to dumb people who mark them as spam in the first place. The emailer was changed at one time to remedy this situation, and before long they where back to being spam.

The best to do is tell your users to check there spam filters.

I tried registering an account, and got this error:

General Error

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 504 Invalid Username or Password

DEBUG MODE

Line : 124
File : C:\Inetpub\vhosts\mastodonrocks.com\httpdocs\forum\includes\smtp.php

and then for the hell of it, i tried to register with the same name, and I got this:
Sorry, but that e-mail address is already registered to a user.
Sorry, but this username has already been taken.

So, It appears that it is registering them, but it's giving that error and not making them active.

It looks like you need to reupload the includes/usercp_register.php file.

Upload this one too: includes/usercp_register.php
Don't know how but somewhere down the line these two files (and others?) got deleted.

I reuploaded all files in /includes/

that did take away the majority of the error, but I'm still getting this:

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 504 Invalid Username or Password

DEBUG MODE

Line : 131
File : smtp.php

so it's still not sending the confirmation email.

It is creating a user profile, making it "unactive", and not sending the confirmation email out.

thanks.

BULK / JUNK mail fixed YAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by nikosama »

I edited the subject line and now Yahoo is happy with the activation email ^_^

file: language\lang_english\email\user_welcome_inactive.tpl

find
Subject: Welcome to {SITENAME} forums

I replaced with this:

Subject: Validation email for {SITENAME}

Next I will test with Hotmail :) Please don't tell Yahoo / hotmail its junk mail :P *jokes*

This change will help people find the validation message..

Niko ^_^
