[ALPHA] Feeds And Discussions Over Feeds (FIND Input based)

Postby pierro78 » Fri Jun 02, 2006 4:47 am

I have improved the FIND Input MOD ( http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=130271 ) so that I can build output feeds where the items point to the original feed items instead of a topic in the forum, like regular phpbb syndication output mods do. This allows to aggregate several feeds into one. Some free services like http://groups.blogdigger.com/groups.jsp?id=2982 or http://peoplefeeds.com/frenchseattleblogarticles do that but their output feed has a limited number of items (like 10 or 15) and they sometimes seem overloaded and thus not very reliable ...

Other features :
1a) I build some (non rss-compatible) xml feeds that give additional information on an item like the address of its phpbb topic & the number of replies (very useful to build discussions and a kind of list of "hot pages", see my demo forum below)
1b) the titles of the ouput items are the same as the original items titles (no 60 characters limit)
1c) there's an option where, if you change the title of the phpbb topic of an item, then the title of the item in the output feed changes accordingly
1d) there's no item duplication if there's 1 identical item in 2 different source feeds (same item URL) (useful when mixing social bookmarking source feeds)
1e) you can delete an item from the output feed by deleting it's topic. The mod will remember it and won't re-add it next time ...

Demo forum :
http://seattlefrancophone.info (check the following icons : Image & Image in the right column)

PS1 : sources and documentation posted, see here : http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... 25#2164225

PS2 :
Here is an intro I have posted on my forum : http://seattlefrancophone.info/viewtopic.php?p=743
note : cliquez ici pour la version francaise

On the forum homepage, in the right column, you can now access 3 lists of favorite pages from the web (Selection de Pages web Commentees, bookmarks sociaux sur "french seattle", articles de blogs de Seattle connus). New pages are extracted automatically from the web every hour.

The new thing is that for each page listed you can click on the small icon with the discussing men (Image) to reach a topic on the forum with some comments on the page.

Adding a comment in a page's topic makes it go to the top of the list again (there might be a delay of 2 hours max before the list is refreshed).

If needed the title of a page can be changed by changing the title of the page's topic. Only moderators can do that so don't hesitate to post a request in the page's topic if you want to change a title ;)

In a similar way it's possible to remove a page from the list of favorite pages by removing its topic.

And it's possible to subscribe to the newsfeeds of the favorite pages.
The newsfeeds with the small talking man Image are very similar to the lists displayed on the homepage (for example the order of the pages in the feeds is the same). The newsfeeds with the regular icons (Image) are very similar to the original feeds on which the list of favorites are based. Pages listed in these feeds are not reordered and their titles always stay the same.

PS :
You can add some pages in these lists of favorites by using a "social bookmarking tool", see here : http://seattlefrancophone.info/viewtopic.php?t=237

Hello,

Please edit your topic title with a prefix as outlined in MOD Development forum rules, section 3.a. This will allow people to see the development status of your MOD at a glance.

Thank you,

The topic was moved from the phpbb discussions forum with its original title by a moderator.
Now I guess the [PRE-ALPHA] prefix is OK ... I guess it might go to [ALPHA] once I've posted the sources ?
(I'll post the sources if a few people are interested in trying my mod)

I figured out a new way to improve my forum using this mod :

This mod allows to build a list of favorite pages selected by the users (the ones which has been commented at least once by users).

This list of Favorites is called "Sélection de Pages web Commentées" on my forum and is only visible on its home page.

I am going to put it on the header of my forum so that it will be visible on all pages :-) - As my header is already crowded I will need to figure something out to put it on there ...

As soon as I am done with that I will post the sources of the mod (unless there is a very strong demand before that ;-) ...)

Well we've must of gone circles with all the different kind of ideas in the Find input MOD thread. this is very intresting. I had once requested something similar but who knew it could be done with the FIND Input MOD. I seen php-nuke and Drupal/Vbulletin with similiar mods. so... yeah this is a great add-on to phpbb. :)

yep, I had a quick look at drupal ...

but using the already existing mods for phpbb it is quite straightforward to build very customizable output feeds

(just found 2 bugs so I figure it's worth it if I don't deliver the mod right now :P ...)

OK I am done with my forum improvement : you can now see a list of "Forum Favorites Pages" ("Pages web Favorites du Forum") on the header of my forum ( http://seattlefrancophone.info )

I am going to start to clean a little bit the sources and write a little documentation ... hopefully you'll have all this soon ;) ...

Ok, because of the language translations I'm just trying to figure out what your doing here, sorrry for my ignorance.

Find input takes RSS Feeds from other sites and adds them into the forum messages.

I still dont quite understand what yours does. You know Im interested :)

I have a test forum going on if you want to try it..

Mine builds on Find input so that my output feeds REALLY point to the original articles and not the topic in the forum

And then I add some niceties in the output articles to point back to the forum anyway ...

Installation & Sources :

- Prerequisites : check them here : http://forumfrancophone.info/fadof/viewtopic.php?t=391

- "FADOF : Configuration - Input" : http://forumfrancophone.info/fadof/viewtopic.php?t=392

- Install "FADOF : Sources - Input" files from http://forumfrancophone.info/fadof/viewtopic.php?t=393

- Install "FADOF : Sources - Output" files from http://forumfrancophone.info/fadof/viewtopic.php?t=394

Utilization :

You can get several xml feeds from fadofrss.php , syntax :
http://yourforum.com/yourphpbb/fadofrss.php[?param1=value1&...&paramN=valueN]

where param=value can be :

f=f1,... : where f1,... = the forums you want to generate a feed for - default : all forums

c=n : where n = number of items in the output feed - default : 15

originalorder=1 : the items in the output feed will be in the same order they were discovered in the input feeds - default : the items in the output feed take the order of forum comments into account

originaltitles=1 : the item titles in the output feed will be the same as in the input feed - defaut : if the topic's 1st post has been edited, then the title of the output article will be the title of the topic

hacking=1 : the items in the output feed will include 2 additional "elements" :
+ phpBBlink which is the the link to the last post of the article topic, and
+ phpBBtopicReplies which is the number of comments/replies in the article topic
- default : these "elements" are not included

commentsOnly=1 : only articles with comments will be in the output feed - default : articles without comments are included in the output feed

orderedby1stcomment=1 : to be used with "commentsOnly=1" : the output feed is ordered by the first comment on an item and not the last comment

Example from my website :
http://yourforum.com/yourphpbb/fadofrss.php?hacking=1&commentsOnly=1
(used to build the "Forum Favorites Pages" ["Pages web Favorites du Forum"] at the top right of my forum)
