Blind Posts (cheater proof) - [Request] for Educational Use

Post by ScienceTeacher »

After searching through all the MODs, I'm wondering if there's anything out there that hides all replies to a topic until the user has posted.

As a teacher, this would be HUGE. Students will have to post to a topic without seeing the other replies. This forces them to develop their own ideas instead of stealing from others. Is there any MODs out there that can do this?

Weird, a few years ago someone asked exactly the same thing, for a quizsite. Het got no replies there (Maybe that mod was used  )

It could be done, I think, I'll have to look in to a way this can be made possible, I'll tell you if anything usefull comes upon my path...

Ideally, I would like my students to be able to read the other replies AFTER they have made their post. I would like this feature as a standard on my site.

If the MOD only allows students to read their own post, that has some benefit to me as their teacher as I can have them write an assignment without ever seeing another post. I'll take a look into that one. This would be a great feature to use on occassion.

that can be custom modded, but if you apply niels' his self auth mod at first, you can always decide if you want to have this one..

( and think of these things : .... for instance, if a student has posted and he/she can see the other postings... will you allow the student's post to be deleted or edited? )

I'll try out Niels' for sure. I see what you are saying, you must have been a good cheater in school  As of now, I allow the students to edit their posts but not delete. I display the posts on the overhead and review their answers as they are posted. Often, students do not adequately answer my question or request. I point this out to them publicly and encourage the edit. Remarkable things happen when students recognize that their work is displayed to the entire class.

Luckily, my students are only 14 and will not likely pick-up on the fact that they can post anything, read everyone else's posts, then edit. I'm sure a few will figure it out.

This MOD is not what I'm looking for. On the other hand, I found another very useful tool!

This is what the self auth MOD does:
## This mod, makes it posible to define forum permission as
## "SELF", basically this enable admin to make forum, where
## only the original poster can read or reply.
## Moderators or admin can still read, post, reply ect. any
## topic even if permission is set to SELF.
## Only the permission READ, REPLY and QUOTE are currently
## affected, original phpbb DELETE, EDIT ect. works default
## as SELF, when set to REG.
## If other mods are installed, they may need to be adjusted,
## the SELF permission will in these mods default to MOD,
## if not adjusted.
## Announcements are not affected by SELF auth, this makes
## it posible to post a message by admin, witch all users may
## see even though it does not belong to them.

I did find another MOD on Niels' site that will be a huge benefit to the start of next school year:
Admin add users [2.0.8/EM]
Makes it possible for admin to create users from admin panel

I've also been looking for something like this to add my students at the start of the year. This past year, I bulk coded new users and manually added them as new students enrolled in my classes. I never allow students to self-register, it makes a BIG mess.

Am I missing the point here ?
Why is the self auth not good 'for the job' you wanted it to do?

To add new 'classes'/pupils I think this mod suits your 'add users' needs :

import tools

Only the original poster can read or reply. There is a benefit to this where I have students post their own topic with their assignment and the only two that will be able to view is the poster and myself. At some point, I want other students to be able to read their work (only after they do their own work!).

I would like a forum to work like a poll. It shows the original topic but no other replies until after the user posts a reply. After posting a reply, the topic opens up and shows everyone's response.

This way, students post an initial idea unbiased before seeing what others came up with.

My biggest problem is when the lazy students read others' replies and paraphrase rather than utilizing self-thought.

like I said above:

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=2163403

this can be custom modded,
( and yes I have the knowledge to do so )

so niels's mod, and if a user has posted permissions are set to normal/ALL for that particular user..

have you managed it already or can I still help?

I've found out how to make replies invisible for individual users for indivisual topics.

I'll release it as a MOD in development [PRE-ALPHA] in just a few hours, making the MOD template now.
