RC1 will contain a converter to go from phpBB2>3.
The current beta has it too but it's a bit glitchy and should not be used live.

I would like to qualify the replies made so far.

for a vanilla board that is true - NO data loss.

BUT if you have mods which have modified the DB such as adding extra fields - they WILL be lost in the conversion.

If you currently have 2.0.21, it should be no problem to update to 2.0.22 if you have easymod installed… though I wouldn't think you would need to.
It should work great with 2.0.21.

So I would try it as-is, then if things don't work correctly… upgrade to 2.0.22

I haven't updated to .22 because not all of my mods have been done with Easymod, and I am a tad afraid that I will break something if I upgrade to .22, and was waiting with baited breath for 3 to go Gold.

it is a good habit in this cases to make a full backup of your forum and database first, also you could try it in localhost if you're confortable with this kind of things.

my 2€cents though.

localhost is still a mystery to me and I have to use FTP to edit PHPbb files. Telnet is not available. I am able to run sql statements with Webmin, but don't really know much about that.

If you update using EasyMod, it will give you some errors if it's going to break anything… which if there's an error, you wouldn't be able to update anyways, so it wouldn't hurt anything to try.

Is it safe to assume that this converter will not support mods?
I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

The converter will take the users, posts, forums, PMs etc but not any MODs (with the exception of the attachment MOD).
