i do believe they open in the same window.

   oh, i apologize....
(my excuse: i use Adblock, and it turns out that allthe ads that open in a new window are blocked on my browser )

yes, you are right. some of the ads do use the deprecated "target='_blank' ".
personally, nowadays, with tabbed browsers, i think the user should be the one to decide (with a decent browser all it takes is to decide whether to click on a link with the left (same window) or middle (new tab) mouse button. that's why i do not like it when the application/web-page decides for me.

PHPBB 3 is great IMO. It does include many important features such as subforums and an easy GUI for adding BB codes.. Also like one of the previous posters mentioned not everyone wants country flags. Personally I find country flags an unncessary use of space. Also easymod probably should have been added then again do you REALLY need it? I have a list of about 5 features I want besides that.. I think PHPBB 3 has all the features that I could really want. Besides phpbb 3 ISN'T modded. Imagen for a second what version 3 will have once mods are included. :D

Your understanding of the term "upgrade" is limitted

Five different styles cloned from subSilver or Prosilver and a hundred different MODs making small text changes or adding some field that uses five database queries to display, judging by the phpBB2 Style and MOD databases.

Anyway is any of this relevant? phpbb3 has its set of standards - whoever is providing the adverts has theirs (and we now know that they are wrong!)

The thing though is that the ads are provided by phpBB as far as I can gather.

Perhaps double standards?

There are already several very interesting mods for Beta5 out there, which will undoubtedly be officially released within days (maybe hours) of phpBB3 going Gold. So I wouldn't be as overly pessimistic as you

Solved it - the banner ads open in a new window whilst the link ads open in the same window (that's it I am saying no more!)

Just a minor note if phpbb.com's site is standards compliant then none of the code should use target attribute at all. However Javascript is highly utlized in advertising and it is thus possible to open a new window.

XHTML 1.0 Strict standard will NOT validate if you use the target attribute in links, thus it is why they do not work in forums. Javascript is more than likely the reason why the ads open the way they do.

*edit* however the ad I just checked just used a target attribute, thus the phpbb.com site does not validate, the theme does not validate but the ad free version of it will.

apart from that, this is correct. depending on how the extra data is represented by the MOD, it can be as simple as a single line added to install/convertors/convert_phpbb20.php

Hm. . .

Would it be OK if I add you guys to my Friends list so I can be reminded to seek your help regarding this matter when a stable release of Olympus is out?

The ads on this site are part of OpenAds. Their output is currently invalid XHTML, causing the errors you see.

I, for one, am glad that links do not open in a new window. And I fully intend to foist this feature on my users.

Some time ago, I installed a chat feature on the forum, and, like everything else in the header menu, when you click on the chat link, it does not open in a new window.

Almost immediately the complaints started flying in: 'but chat should open in a new window'... 'it's not convenient' blah bah blah

I could explain until I was blue in the face: This way you get to CHOOSE... you have a TABBED BROWSER now, use it! All web standards explain against the use for forcing new windows.

But they always came back with the same argument: 'all the other forum links open in a new window!'. To which I could only respond by deriding phpBB.

Well now that argument is taken away... phpBB is up to date...

Hopefully, soon people won't have to think "will-it-or-won't-it-open-in-a-new-window" whenever they click on a damned hyperlink. The web will be more uniform... People will know what's going to happen when they click on something. And that's a good thing.
