How stable is beta5?

Post by mrzippy »

I don't want to get shot speculating when the RC will be released, but how stable is beta5?

I am setting up a new site mainly based on a forum and I need some of the features in version 3.

I am reasonably happy using PHP and MySQL so would I be safe using beta5 if the RC is not released soon?

My timescale is the next 4 weeks for my site.

BTW I love proSilver, it looks really cool shame it's not in beta5.

By definition beta is not stable otherwise it would be called RC

Put it this way.
Use the beta 5 now and you are on your own as long as you have it on your boards.
There is no support for beta x updated to RC's and gold.

Please read:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... 6&t=517948

It says dont use it yet. :)

But that was with reference to upgrades of 2.x boards, as the upgrade script is buggy.

Whereas mine would be a clean install at beta5, there was a migration from beta4.

In theory clean install beta5 > RC1 should be OK assuming an upgrade path is offered as I never upgraded an old board.

Shame there is no timescale on the RC as I have a deadline, so I might have to use another board then, which is a shame as I quite like the flexibility as ease of use of phpBB.

The single feature I need is sub-forums, if that was in phpBB 2.x I would just use that.

It clearly states in the upgrade announcement that there will be NO support for beta 5 > RC upgrades

No, there will be no support for such boards :)

:(

Thanks for the comments anyway...

Dare I ask when the RC might be declared, or is it that far away that it cannot even be speculated at the moment?

Within the next month I go phpBB, otherwise I find another board to use :( as an unsupported install is not my idea of fun!

There are no release dates. :)
You can allways install a phpBB2 and convert it to phpBB3 when the time comes. ;)

Only if I can find a work around for needing sub-forums.

My thought is several categories on the main page, then replace this page with a custom one, therefore looking like sub-forums to the user.

Just tried my idea with phpBB2 and it doesn't show the category in the breadcrumbs, so it's not use.

Oh well I hope the RC is released within the next couple of weeks, then I am sorted.

I used XMB 1.9.5 on another site, but that is not as flexible or secure as phpBB.

Thanks, that might help me out, didn't think to look at mods..

Only issue would be the upgrade to v3 once this mod is installed.

Actually I just looked at the mod, it's not exactly easy to install being so many changes...

And I am quite happy coding in PHP...

Oh well I will have to find another BB to use for my site :( unless I can find a way to avoid sub-forums, which I'm not sure I can.

How fast do you need the site? How quickly do you expect to be able to do your own developments? I'm currently already making preparations to upgrade my site to 3.0, working on the template and the bits of integration I have. I expect RC1 to be out before I finish that work (but I can't put a lot of time in, so it may be several weeks before I finish). It's a bit of a gamble, of course, it may still be months away, but "extrapolating" from the rate at which betas came out lately and the number of bugs that seem to be in beta 5, I don't think it will take very long.
