I'm not sure if such a mod already exists. I've searched the database countless times, and not found anything.
I've seen password protected topics on lots of vBulletin forums, and was wondering if I can do the same on phpBB.

yes, such a mod exist for phpbb, however, the mod is pretty old and I dont know if it is still working fine with new phpbb versions. you can search in phpbbhacks.com website for that mod. look for topci lock or forum lock.
