Re: [Beta] Multi-race rank set mod AKA Ranking Themes (1.1b6)

Post by IBBoard »

Multi-race Rank Themes v1.1b6 is now out.

It mainly includes Subsilver stylings for the mod (I'm glad I don't have to work with that style too much).

There is also one fix - the creation of the rank theme list in the profile has now been moved outside the "if allow birthdays" block in the source code. This only affects sites that disable birthdays (who wouldn't have seen the list), and seems to have occurred during phpBB3's later RCs when they made the birthday section optional.

Multi-race Rank Themes v1.1b7 is now out.

It includes two fixes that have been ported from the 1.0 branch (I'm still trying to get that validated). One was a minor formatting issue, the other involves a small move of code to fix an "undefined variable" warning in the ACP.

Also, I've been in contact with ccole513 to try to solve a few problems with his install. A couple have resulted in previous fixes, and beta 7 includes a fix for a query in memberlist.php so that the rank themes list is now alphabetically ordered (my ranks were naturally alphabetically ordered, so I hadn't noticed).

Thanks to anyone who is testing this. Any and all constructive feedback is good. Hopefully I should be able to get 1.2 in to the validation queue not long after 1.0 is (eventually) approved.

I love this mod. It's coming in very handy for me.

I've just stupidly installed a slightly out of date version, and I'm just curious if there has been, or will be, a way for Admins to set user's themes to the 'public' and 'private' themes? Also, is there a way to set a user's theme to a private theme, or were the private themes just an option for themes that are a 'work in progress' to hide them from the public eye/temporarily disable them?

Additionally, I assume the idea of setting permissions for who can and can't set themes based off individual users and groups?

As far as I can remember there has been public and private since the very first release. You need to edit the rank theme to change it. All that controls is whether it is available for users to use, though, so as you said it is only really to hide "work in progress" themes.

As for permissions, that isn't implemented yet. Everyone is currently allowed to select any theme from the list (unless they have a special rank, e.g. admins). My plan was to introduce that and modifying rank themes from the ACP in the next version.

Also, v1.0 has now been officially released, albeit with a typo in the title. Unless anyone has any problems with 1.1b7 I'll consider b7 to be RC1 and add 1.1 to the moderation queue this weekend.

Here is my Wish list....

I have a Car and Tuning website so i need a way for the users to "wear" their colors... to have a "rank" describing the autoclub they belong to, some times they belong to 2 autoclubs.

So this is what i need to be under every username:
USERNAME
-"ADMIN" or "MODERATOR" Ranks
-Post count Ranks
-Auto club
-Auto club
-Auto club (3 just to be sure)
-Special Rank (seller, banned, etc etc)

From what im reading this can already be done, also if i link a user to a usergroup called "Diablos" and i set a private race called Diablos only for that usergroup... that resolves the issue of users selecting autoclubs that they don't belong to, thus rendering the administration from acp redundant right? please correctme if im wrong

Although i haven't tested it yet, but from what i read in your approved thread could you implement a feature like so:
*Require permissions to change it
*A option in the admin panel so you can have different sets (Eg: christmas, easter ect) and then the admin can click a button/select a option and it changes all the rank images to that set (eg: it would change a mod's RI to a easter mod RL and a Admin's RL to a easter Admin RL)?

dem: With the mod you can have as many rank schemes as you want (there is a limit, but it's in the millions) but each user can only have one rank theme at once. If you wanted them to "show their colours" to two clubs then you'd have to create a separate theme that has some kind of combined image.

Your second point is how I would plan to work a future feature. At the moment anyone (except someone with a special rank theme, e.g. admins) can choose any rank, and selection is only through the UCP. A future version will work some form of permissions (either basic "they can select themes" or a more complex "this user group is allowed to use this theme"). I may do both, but it depends what I can work out in a plan of how it could be done.

Hope that makes sense.

v1.2.0 has now been submitted to the validation queue. It was an exact copy of 1.1b7 with the version number incremented.

Work on v1.3.0 will begin soon, but first off I've got to work out why my local development version of the forum stops outputting the page and doesn't error when it hits an undefined index in a skin file but my production server doesn't :\ It has only started doing it since I patched the forum to 3.0.1.

I've just whipped up a new MOD to compliment this one - Special and Normal Rank Images MOD. It's currently on its first beta release and is only a small mod, but it shows both the special image and the normal rank image for people with special ranks. It also includes separate instructions on how to make it work with this mod.

The version of the MOD in this topic has now been released as 1.2.2 and is in the MOD DB.

If anyone has any questions then I should be around from time to time, but due to real life commitments (wife going in to hospital for two weeks as a precautionary measure before our baby is born) v1.3 won't be made for a little while yet.

I hope all goes well with your wife and baby :)

Understanding that a response to this may take a while, I'm still going to post my inquiry or I'll forget it

My husband and I have a medieval/fantasy RPG forum which includes various guilds. Each guild has its own set of ranks and they are not based on post count. This mod that you've created to allow ranks to be categorized is great, but being unable to manually add the specific rank from a specific category isn't really useful. For example, the thieves guild has 11 "specialties" (ranking levels):

- Agent
- Apprentice
- Cutpurse
- Footpad
- Guild Master
- Guildsman
- Initiate
- Master Thief
- Operative
- Specialist
- Taskmaster

These cannot be obtained simply by reaching a specific post count. So my question is:

Do I have to set these ranks up in the special theme category also in order to assign these areas of expertise to the members characters? It'd be nice to be able to select the rank from the specific theme category that the member is a part of. Also, it'd be nice if when viewing the theme rank lists, if it showed the members names. Example:

Code: Select all

Rank Rank Image Ranking Member(s) Required Posts
Cutpurse (image here) Taslyn (Non-Applicable)
                                 Athena

Everything is going well, thanks. My extended period of paternity leave and annual leave is almost at an end, though, so I'll soon be back to full-time work!

Based on what you posted, how do you handle it at the moment? Do you just have (making numbers up) 11 special ranks * X guilds and no-one with a 'normal' post-count incrementing rank? Or is this on top of a normal ranking scheme?

Special ranks are currently separate from themes, because I thought special ranks should be special and separate from themes. That means that using the mod then every one of those ranks (and the ones for other guilds) would have to be added to the "Special" theme.

As for the idea of people using a theme, I might have to look in to that. I probably wouldn't do it in quite the same way, since a large forum would lead to a ridiculously huge list of names, but some way of saying "who is using this theme" would be interesting.

Yes. The only incrementing ranking scheme that I have that goes according to post count are set for those members whose characters are not affiliated with any specific guild but instead are just 'citizens' of the realm. Here are screenshots of the rank themes I have set up using your mod:

Each guild is also set up as a group, but of course, each guild/group has its own ranking hierarchy and not one single default. So I was hoping that there would be a way in which I could just assign the ranks directly from the rank theme that's been set up for each guild instead of having to create the ranks a second time in the special theme section.

It sounds like what you want is a combination of the "only certain groups are allowed certain schemes" feature (which I've not added yet) and a new "special ranks can only be assigned to people using that scheme" feature. The latter is possibly a bit tougher, since I would need to take in to account what would happen when someone changed rank theme.

The other alternative would be to change the way themes work slightly so that a special rank can be considered part of a theme, even if it can be assigned without the user using that theme. That would be a bit more of a hack, though, as it would be purely an administration grouping thing and wouldn't really have much meaning without the full feature in the first paragraph.

As I see it at the moment, if each of those ranks doesn't have a post count then you don't really have a set of rank themes in the sense of this mod as it stands, just a large collection of special ranks that can be categorised by guild (if that makes sense).

It does make sense and yes, that's about it at the moment, lol. So am I correct in assuming that I need to create these ranks in the special theme category in order to assign them to the members?
