Post by [Johnny] » Mon Dec 02, 2002 2:33 pm

hi people

i'm with this big problem
i have my forum, its a closed forum, but with 5000 hits a day

yesterday, my site have transfered 1gb... and i got an email from the server admin, to turn my site off, because of the high trafic...

i've already search in the community, but i have some doubts, and want some tips if possible...

- how can i decrease the transfered data?

- how can i speed up my site? (gzip enabled = faster but more transfered data?)

thanks

Remove the duplicate css from the overall_header.tpl and make sure it's only in the .css file.

This cuts down bandwidth quite a lot.

Disable private messaging.

Remove some images and use text instead, where needed. (cellpic etc).

I get about 3-5000 a day and I don't use anything near that.

Do you have downloads aswell?

I have used that much in the past but only on 2 occasions:

1) We were attacked and someone ground down our stats page and reloaded a 300k image around 100,000 times.
2) Google went mad and spidered us with about 60 IP's.

Check your web logs and see what is causing the traffic (by client and by file).

Can you tell me how to do this? Step by step?

Thanks...I am kinda a dummy at this stuff and I need to reduce my bandwidth.

Thanks again...:)

Also have a look at Daz's FI Subtext. It's a mainly text theme with very few images.

Open up overall_header.tpl and simple_header.tpl:

Find
<!-- link rel="stylesheet" href="templates/subSilver/{T_HEAD_STYLESHEET}" type="text/css" -->

Change to:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="templates/subSilver/{T_HEAD_STYLESHEET}" type="text/css" />

and remove everything between <style type="text/css"></style> tags.
Note: Removing this means that you cannot edit the style via the Admin Panel. To edit the style, you'll need to open the css file. Backup overall_header.tpl and simple_header.tpl first!!!!
